Credit card fraud

The more you use a card the higher the chance it'll be compromised. The more transaction floating around out there, the better the chance an algorithm will hit on the number and on the black web it'll be.

I'm old school, still write checks, carry money, no debit card, but between wife and I still use CC probably every day for like gas stations or shopping. We've been compromised many times through the years, the bogus charges in FL, CA, Turkey and others places I don't remember.

I've had lengthy talks with CC fraud departments several times through the years, my impression is there is no way to totally prevent it. The thieves, those stealing the numbers, are smart and innovative.

I don't mix personal card purchases with the business card. Also have a low limit card for purchases made on the Internet in case there is an identity theft issue. A fourth card is not used at all unless there is a hack that causes one of the others to be declined. So far I have never been hacked. Do pretty much all purchases with plastic. Being careful where you shop and buying online only from trusted web sites helps.

I have been just abused lately. I live on a company credit card for home stuff to boat stuff to work stuff. I carry no cash…. Like maybe $40 at any given time. It’s a chase ink card ….. a few employees have them for work related expenses. They have great point system. I redeem the points for cash every quarter….. which is substantial

But…… the card keeps getting compromised. My current card is 5 weeks old…. This morning chase texts me and asked did you charge $41 for school supplies online last night….. so I know this rabbit hole. I thought for a second …say yes I thought….. then I said no Phuck them….. so I opted for a new card. I have so many auto payments on the card like cell, car, marina, yacht club…. Netflix…. Too numerous to list…. Oh all utilizes at apartment rent…. Just a pain in the ass to switch to a new card.

I asked for two cards to use one for recurring charges and another everyday card to use for meals, gas, Home Depot etc ….stuff I pay in person

You guys have any good ideas ?….. I’m not doing cash or debit card.
I have Chase, went thru it 2 weeks ago. Had to change on all auto pay accounts, fortunately I only have 4.

For recurring payments, I put as many as possible through PayPal. When a card gets compromised it's easier to set them up again in PayPal with the new card.

Cabelas (Capital One) and Amex. Both text me when card is used so I approve or cancel the card. Capital One is great about switching over the monthly auto stuff for me. Amex is all business. I'm Diamond Medallion just with purchases and never carry a balance. So for the $550 annual fee I get a companion pass yearly, Sky Lounge access etc without ever paying interest.

I used to do be platinum with Amex to get into sky lounge but stopped flying all the time when retired and couldn’t justify the annual fee

Is the companion pass easy to get. I heard there are too many restrictions on day and time. We fly first class every year to key west from Indy…. That fee would be worth it just for that

Just recently went through this but with my debit card. I used my debit for everything because i hate having any bill at the end of the month. Three wire transfers for 997.71 each in texas. They got three before the bank caught on to what was happening and shut off my card. Took weeks to get it back but lesson learned. Now i use credit for everything and pay off every month. Steal the banks money, not mine.

Odd was the amount. Why not just clean the account out? I figure a transaction under 1,000 must mean something??

Ouch ….. yes anyone will tell you don’t debit…. That’s one thing I won’t do is give my bank account info out. Use someone else’s money and pay the bill in full every month

I don't have problems, but I will admit I call the Diamond number to book my flights. That has it's perks. Online always runs into issues.

I use one (Citi) for my occasional online purchases and for two monthly auto-pay bills. BA for regular use. Cash is still in use for me. I only use my debit card for cash at BA teller machines.
I still try to have a few hundred in my money clip. Nothing like the old days. I'd always have at least a thousand and usually more in my pocket.

I never understood why anyone would use debit cards, unless they don't have the discipline to limit spending to less than they net (Weill I don't understand that either, but my siblings fall into that category). I use someone else's money for 30 - 60 days for free? Absolutely sign me up. I can control myself. Plus "steal the bank's money".

My niece had her debit card stolen. She only had about $100 in the account, but the bank let a $2K transaction go through and then tried to hold her accountable for the "overdraft". Took her months to sort out. I trained my kids better and they only use credit cards.

My banker told me he never uses his debit card from his own bank, he always uses credit, then pays off at the end of every month

I am similar, but with Scheels (First Bank). I get an immediate text for every transaction. Used to be with Cabelas until Bass Pro took them over.

I too am Amex for Delta, however my status is Lead / Cubic Zirconia. :(

I didn’t chime in because a lot has been said already. We try to keep an eye on transactions with immediate texts, never use our personal bank account Visa’s for external internet transactions, but also limit the amount of auto pays as well. Maybe I’m old fashioned in that when I was broke during my 20’s, I liked controlling what bills were sent. Not a big fan of “outa sight, outa mind,” and then balancing at the end of the month.

This I understand. In 30 years as a controller/CFO I have had to make decisions between paying vendors or making payroll. I don't want vendors to dictate if I make payroll. So no autopay no matter what the incentive.

Personally I have very little on auto pay. And if they increase the charge without informing me, I end their service.

Pretty common issue these days. Hackers are very sophisticated.
We have a separate credit card that we use for only online purchases where they don’t accept Paypal. It has a low limit, and it seems to be the one that gets compromised most often. No autopayments on that one which makes it easier to replace. I use PayPal wherever it is accepted for online buying.

In terms of dark web and hacker security, if you want to try something scary, try Avast’s password leak check. It’s free, but you need to opt out of their sales pitch (its PC and device security software - FYI I use it). You enter your email address and they will send you a report of where that email is used in a website that has been hacked and your information is on the dark web. I got a list of sites AND MY PASSWORDS USED. We immediately started using a Password manager (LastPass) and changed all passwords to random ones that LastPass generates. Anyway, if you want to see what is on the dark web linked to your email and online accounts, give it a try:
https://www.avast.com/hackcheck/

Since we are diverging a bit, I have a buddy that was all in on Lastpass since they came out (a decade ago?)... but switched up after their (lastpass's) cloud data was hacked. Not sure how long you have used it, but if your master pw is brute forced, someone could get your whole vault.

But yes, we all should assume all of our IDs and PWs are on the dark web and be using 2-factor (or other) auth, not reuse PWs and change them regularly.

I have one son in cyber-security, white hat hacking, his company is hired to do security audits on sites, stuff, databases, etc. The other son is at JP Morgan Chase in their fraud department. He's currently in commercial size and it's crazy to hear some of the stories. The majority of the things he deals with are fake invoices (routing/acct # off by one digit), etc., and he's called up business asking if they are sure they want the million % wire to go to this new acct... some have argued yes, then the next day come back pleading for a do over.

I was Amex for years and years and never had a problem. I’m replacing my Visa Ink card and I got an Amex Delta Reserve card. I’ll try it for a year and see how it goes
