Good idea. A piece of plastic holding a fender under stress is not going to cut it, as you found out. The longer the plastic, the easier it will break.

I'm about to lose some access to my rod holders, so I need to address that.

Fine ideas, all. i am looking for a grab bar for my line girl tender to give her confidence as she delivers or removes the stern line on my 360 DA. Tried a temporary suction type for home use, to give her a sense of what might work, yet want to find something more permanent.
