Mercruiser with Bravo 3 out drive
Good morning all,

i am hoping someone can give me some advice on a starting problem. My sea Ray is a 2002 weekender with a Bravo 3 out drive powered by a mercruiser 5.0. Boat is in water however sat for a month as I was traveling quite a bit and sometimes out of state. In any case when I returned tried to start and it would crank and seemed batteries were low. I was aware one battery was in need of replacing and the plan was to change it out at seasons end. So I thought bad battery and replaced it and still cranks like hell and sounds like it is going to turn over and doesn't. Not sure if maybe old fuel or plugs need replacing. I was also told maybe a shot of ether or maybe a short of wd40?

Thank you in advance for listening and or responding!

You need to trouble shoot and determine if your issue is related to spark, fuel or air.

Might want to do a tune up.. Plugs, wires, distributor, rotor.

Check your fuel pressure

Report back and we can try to help...

so it sounds like its firing, but just not starting? If thats the case, the problem sounds fuel related. Time to have that carb rebuilt.

Quick shot of carb cleaner and try to start. If yes, fuel delivery / carb issue. If no - check spark.

If you find you have no spark then get your batteries fully charged.A weak battery system may sound like it is cranking the motor all right but the starter is using all the current from the batteries and there is nothing left over for the ignition system for spark.

Check to see if the "kill switch" has been tripped. Make sure the toggle switch is all the way up, into the "guarded" position.

I have my money on this answer. Hey, we've all done it at least once right? CHECK THE KILL SWITCH Sometimes, the easiest solution is the answer.

Good morning to all and thank you very much for all the good info. I will put it to good use when it dries out as we have another rainy day here On Cape Cod. Once I figure out problem I will follow up with another message.

you guys are great!

thanks again

Update........Good afternoon folks, switch was in correct position and Paul had it right. I used a couple ounces of WD40 instead of starting fluid (close ingredients) and after 3 tries it fired up! Thanks Paul and everyone else for the response.
Hope I can return the favor soon!

That's good that you got it running. However, since you have a fuel injected engine you really shouldn't have had to do that. It could be that because it sat for a while, that the fuel bled out of the system and just needed a bit more cranking. But if you continue to have an issue of it taking more than a few cranks to start, I would get the system tested. There could be a leak somewhere - a leak doesn't necessarily mean fuel leaking out... it could be air leaking in.

Thanks Dennis; I will be pulling boat soon and put it to bed for the winter and will test at that time.
again thanks for your help
