Cummins QSC 500 (44 DA, 2006)
I recently began noticing small amount of oil on top of port engine, near crankcase breather. I'm searching the Cummins literature for servicing specs for crankcase breather, but not sure if it needs replacing or cleaned. I may have to call the local Cummins tech, but wanted to troubleshoot for possible remediation actions. The attached pic shows the oil location. Stbd engine does not have this issue. If anyone has experienced this issue, I would be grateful for your advice. Engine: QSC 500; about 800 hours.

Sinbad, I’ve got 450 hrs and no oil. I would suspect the painted section of coupling hose is leaking. I would replace it with a good quality Low pressure fuel/oil hose and new hose clamps. I’ll bet you will find that the rubber hose is hard and brittle. Shouldn’t need a Cummins tech.

Thanks. That area of the hose does look to be leaking; I will take it off and inspect.

This is 100% the issue, however you need the factory hose as the oil return line is like 3/8" and the breather output is like 1/2", cant remember the price but it was cheap. I had the same problem last year. Just need a new hose that is painted white now (will be black when replaced). Its a super easy fix, remove the S shaped breather hose to get at the first clamp holding down the oil return line, slide off the old, slide on the new and re-assemble. No more than 10 minutes per engine.

Waterhouse, thanks. Good to know, as I suspected that was issue, also talked with my local Cummins tech and he agreed. I am replacing the breathers and hose. Cummins tech said make sure the hose is oil resistant.

Besides direct from a Cummins dealer where else can you get these hoses?
I purchased the oil resistant hose at O'Reilly's auto. The Cummins parts guy gave me some silicone hose, said it was oil resistant. I googled, he was wrong.
