1997 330 da What is the proper repair procedure in repairing the hull exhaust port cracking ?? Also what should a boat yard charge to the repair ? Thanks

There are 2 ways to fix the cracking, which is normal. One way is the cheap way......grind out the cracks, fill with a putty type filler then spray with gelcoat. Figure a couple of hours plus materials.

The other way is to remove all the filler Sea Ray used when the exhaust pipe was inserted and lay in fiberglass cloth and resin to reconstruct the radius, shape and fill with thickened resin then spray the area with gelcoat. Figure 4-5 hours of labor plus materials.......but this way, the cracks are a lot less likely to re-appear. The exhaust is added to the finished hull by hole sawing a hole for the pipe, inserting the pipe then the radius is shaped and finished with a putty type filler. The cracks occur because the filler and the fiberglass have different rates of expansion.

Local yard wants 800.00 for both sides, using fiberglass hair repair. How long should it last ? I think somebody shoud have made some kind of screw over type flang( maybe chrome) ? Also should owners be worried about water soaking through the cracks and causing long term problems to the hull ? Thanks

Just had it done on both sides and the marina charged me $450 to get it done. I have to say it looks GREAT!! Looks brand new and I have to say it was well worth it!

What can I say.....what you have is the way Sea Ray chose to make the boats. The cracks usually don't hold water and it seldom takes more than a day to dry out the fiberglass once the putty is ground out, but once the cracks occur, it isn't going to get better by waiting to repair them and you do run some risk ok more damage than needed.

I had the ones on my 390EC repaired with fiberglass cloth and resin and kept the boat another 7 years before I sold it and the cracks never reappeared. If you use a filler instead of fiberglass you can expect the cracking to come back in a couple of years.
