I heard today that a boater who has a 280 with I/Os and who has NOT used his boat in a month took it out for a ride and was only able to go 5 miles an hour,
he took it to back to the marina and they checked it out and decided to haul it. And to his amazement the props were covered with barnacles, so bad that he was unable to travel more then 5 miles an hour.....

is that stretching it some? or can that actually happen after a month of no boating???

last year we had our 34 rinker in branford,ct. the same thing happened to our boat, would not plane off had to haul it and get small barnacles cleaned off props. Several boats in the marina had same issue from inactivity. Rumor was that it was some new strain of organism dumped from a frieghter in the sound.

Happend to me in the Thames River in Ct 3 summers ago. It was actually at the end of the season. It was a 37ft hunter sailboat. We were out on it labor day. Went back at the end of September to bring it to the marina to get it hauled and I could barely clear the mooring field. There was a really Bad vibration and the boat really didnt want to go. Nursed it back to the mooring and had a diver check it. He said my 2 bladed prop looked like a catchers mitt. Had it cleaned and went onmmy way.

I have a diver down on my boat every 3 weeks to clean the hull, props, etc. This is a normal practice in these parts anyway...

I have lost significant performance over the six weeks in September to October on two successive years. WOT performance dropped from 49mph to 35mph. . .this sounds like stretching to me, but it is not inconcievable.

That is exactly what happened to me this season. My boat was sitting in the slip for about 5 weeks, between bad weather and family functions I did not get a chance to take it out. When I put it in it the OD, props & trim tabs were perfectly clean, 5 weeks later I finally took it out and I don't think I was able to hit 5mph, my speedometer starts at 10mph. I scraped a bucket of crud off it, 100% back to normal. This is the first season for me at this Marina and after talking to some of the other boaters there they told me if you take your boat out every 2 or 3 weeks the crud does not have a chance to build up. I call it crud because I don't really know what barnacles look like....but they might be barnacles????? The people at the marina call them worms but after looking then up on the interent they are actually tiny muscle that look like worms. Bizarre!!! Really is the damnedest thing....they scrapped off pretty easily but who needs this?

Moral of the story: Run your boat!

(I personally am proud how much I contributed to global warming in the last two weeks)

Yup you are correct...... however ...... if I blew off all the Family functions and took the boat out instead ..... the boat, barnacles and all would probably be part of a divorce settlement. ha-ha. You gotta weigh your battles.

We took our boat out today after 5 weeks of inactivity due to weather, family stuff, and remodeling our new home to us.....and after 5 weeks she still ran great with no barnacle issues...i was really worried but feel relieved now......:)

I think this is a very local issue. I had a boat in a wet slip about 10 miles quite a few years ago and never had this problem. The old timers here keep saying that the cleaner the bay gets the worse this things get. Great huh? I don't know, I really like the Marina it has everything I want, the price is right, well maintained but who needs this BS?
