I bought a new boat and smoked an engine on the way home. It's a 31 Mainship Sedan Bridge with twin 350 inboards.

What is everyone paying for a complete engine R&R. I'm thinking it's going to need a long block at least.

Thanks.

Check Michigan Motorz. They will have what you need for repower.

I looked at them. Looks like about $2800 for a long block. I was wondering what people were paying for the complete job.

Sorry. That sucks bad.
try centerstateengine.com
local company to me. Pretty good from what I understand.

Curious how many hours on the engine and what exactly happened?

We repowered our prior boat (1989 280 Sundancer) when an engine failed. We replaced one engine at a time over a 2 year period starting in about 2010. Our local marina, a Mercruiser dealer, did the job for us. We got remanufactered engines directly from Mercruiser. The cost was about $7,500 per engine installed.

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck on the repower and let us know how it shakes out.

Thank you for that. I'm assuming those were small blocks?

I'm not exactly sure what happened. We haven't started tearing down yet to figure it out. I think I lost a water pump, overheated and threw a rod.

the mercruiser reman package is great deal as mentioned above they are complete engines and come with 3 year warranty.. When ever I can doing repowers I use those packages.. EFI runs more..

labor will be hard to figure unless exact same boat has been repowered by the tech doing the work, then the tech will know what it takes to swap it out and will be able to calculate labor which could change any way all depends on how well it comes apart.

sorry, should have mentioned that..... Yes, they were small blocks. The first one was the 5.7TKS (2 bbl carb). The second one was the 357 model (4bbl carb). Despite two different motors (and different sized props) she ran well. Had different throttle positions to match rpms but I made it work. From what I understand the 5.7TKS is no longer available, but I think the 357 is. The 357 is a good motor and worth a look.

Looks like I'll be going with a reman long block from a local shop. The mechanic doing the work comes quite highly recommended and is a friend of a friend.

Ill let you know how it progresses. I dropped off the deposit today.

Has to be done by now. How did things go?

I just re powered my 370AC with 2 7.4 380HP Horizons (new heads, reman blocks) 12K for the motors & 11K for the labor. It's and Aft cabin so getting the motors out and in in was labor intensive.

First reman went in early summer. Spent a month chasing coolant leaks, I'm closed cooled. Found out the block was cracked that they built on. Waited a month for a second rebuild. Got it installed and started systematically blowing coolant hoses. Replaced all the hoses and the radiator cap and things have settled in. Now I've realized that the lines for my remote oil filters are leaking. I pulled them off during winter layup and I'll have a new set made before spring.

$6k and a summer of headaches.

We still got to use the boat every weekend though.

Sorry you had such bad luck with the new to you but at least you never lost time with it.

I know this is old but I was $8,000 total including install. 357 alpha straight from mercruiser, had to pay extra for the taller risers, also had a trim sender replaced and some adjustments made to shift cables, and hauling from my house to shop.

I paid 11K for a new port long block and new manifolds and risers on both motors. That also included new raw water pumps on both motors. Parts and labor.

The good news was we really didn't miss any boating. The shop worked with our schedule to keep the boat with us on the weekends. A nuisance and stressful but it should be ready for the spring.

We replaced pumps, heat exchangers and did tune ups along the way. Both engines and the gen are fully serviced and ready to go.

I bought a "silver package" 5.7 from Michigan Motorz and have been very pleased. The silver package is a compleet motor w/o manafolds. New carb, coil, Distributers, wires, plugs, water pump, flywheel. I feel it's a heck of a deal for $4,200

I purchased new manafolds the summer b/f and didn't need them. I also had some issues with the carb thst came on the motor and Phill and Clayton went out of there way to help me diagnos the issues was the carb and they also sent me a new carb, fuel line, and gasket all at no additional cost. These guys really stand by there work and will do what they can (with in reason) to keep people happy.

I did a pair of gold packages from Michiganmotorz over a period of two years. I went closed cooling on both and I did all the labor myself so only other cost was yard charges for the crane to pull the engines and replace, very minor fee. About $6500 each engine.
