Before I fully commit to a boat I'm in the process I'm buying I'm trying to tally up all of the things I will need to redo. One of them is replacing the old canvas. This picture isn't the boat but its how the canvas is on the boat.

Any idea what it costs to replace this? The hardware is all there and good, just need canvas replaced. I'm in so calif so I know its going to be more than most places but I have no idea if its going to be $1000 or $5000. With all of the boats I've owned I never had to do canvas and most things I do myself.

If you don't mind doing it yourself, go to sailrite.com. They have a host of youtube videos showing how to do most everything, and they sell all the material.

A good sewing machine can be had for about $500 new (walking foot) or search craigslist. None of this is difficult, just a bit tedious at times. Make a project out of it and save yourself thousands.

Good info! Maybe I can get my wife to tackle this while I do the flooring and literally everything else lol

It's really not that difficult. Start at sailrite and watch a few videos. They sell machines, but I suggest looking around on CL first for a good used machine.

I bought a Omega machine which has interchangeable parts with the sailrite machines. Got mine new for about $500. Learn this then move into doing upholstery work as well.

I watched a little of a video and it looks pretty daunting. I'll keep looking into it. At some point (depending o cost) it may be worth just paying someone. If its $1500 to redo it all by a Pro I'd just do that. But if its $3000 then I may try it myself. I just have no idea what it cost.

Are you replacing the back curtain or all of the canvas including the insenglass? If you are redoing the entire canvas as the pic shows I would say 7k give or take depending on how fancy you get with the design and materials.

You may be able to get a complete set from Great Lakes Boat tops if that is the OEM sea ray canvas and frames. It will fit, but you have to install the snaps yourself or have someone to them. There is a reseller of their stuff on here as well.

Just the back curtain. It already has one with 1 window in back. Snaps are all in place but its just getting old. The hardware is all there (although not needed for a back curtain). So they would just take what I have no and copy it. You really think that's $7k? If so, I'm starting a new business.

$1,200 if just the back curtain

Careful on the wife thing.... I made a pattern for a dash cover in May.... here it is in my master bedroom today.. :)

So to add insult To injury... I used that sheet for the pattern which was the temporary cover For the dash.... to replace the sheet I am using her favorite blue and white striped beach towels .... that are fading from the sun......and I still don’t have a dash cover.
I think she is spending her time looking for new beach towels :)

Will you hope to match the color on the aft curtain or go with something different? A good match might be a challenge depending on the existing color and age.

I like the sewing idea if you're only doing the aft curtain. After a bit of practice, doable. The rest of your canvas...no way. The learning curve is wicked steep. The folks that do their own full enclosures after a year of sewing are some kind of savant :) There's a reason it'll cost you $7k+ to replace your entire canvas - because it's worth it...

hahaha ok, sounds like my wife. Maybe I will put her in charge of just finding a shop to do it.

Great lakes doesn't have the pattern for this model. There is a place that might. I forget the name but it's in the 370 sundancer thread. Beach jammer or something like that.

The canvas currently is black. The top and "visor" look decent. The back is showing damage. It may not match perfectly (new black vs a few year old black) but I'm not being picky with this boat. My last boat I drove myself crazy perfecting everything but rarely used it. This one I plan on the opposite. Use it a lot but won't care if some vinyl is fading or gelcoat isn't shiny each time I'm on it.

What is the year, model and HIN and I will look into the canvas for you. You can PM me the details or fill out our form: https://www.covemarine.com/request. If you would like me to call you leave the best time and telephone in the comments.

This is the actual boat. I don't have photos of the back canvas but it looks like the one I posted above (same shape). The window in the back of mine is ripping and canvas just looks a little "thin" I guess. I figured the top and visor are decent (can last another year or two) but the back should be done now. At $1200 or so thats doable, I'll have a shop do it for sure. Another thing I want to make is the square canvas that attaches to rods in the fishing pole holders. Just a cover while in the boat relaxing. My wife is demanding that one so she's not in the sun.

Just a few words of advice...be careful buying ready made canvas, even if it is supposed to fit your boat. Example, I bought factory replacement for a 270da I had. Very nice canvas, I bought front and back Bimini tops. Problem, almost every zipper was backwards. Lesson learned, Sea Ray used a few different canvas makers during that period. All canvas looked the same, But zippers and some canvas to canvas snaps were different. Big picture lesson, would have been money and time ahead just having a professional shop do the job right. The priceless part....pro job total $4500. My "save a buck" method, an extra/wasted $2000.

Great Lakes made most of the canvas for Sea Rays in the 340 range and under except for a few made internally or the Arizona built boats that were made by Westland with most of the patterns lost.

If your zippers were reversed then they were probably changed by a previous owner, not the original canvas or the HIN did match up with GLBTs productions. If they did they would have certainly stood behind the product and either had it returned for repair or replacement. I had this on my 340SDA when I got a new sunshade - I needed to swap out a bunch of the zippers on my aft curtain because they were replaced by a previous owner.

I have had several customers who I have had to turn away because they thought their canvas was original but it had actually been replaced previously. This is all part of our discussion and disclosures before the order.
