Doing some general maintenance on my 190 and for some reason cannot find the coolant recovery bottle. I can find everything else. It shows a picture of it in the manual but the only bottle I see is the lube monitor bottle. I cannot find the heat exchanger cap either. Is it the bigger blue circular cap in the front of the engine above the belt. There's also a smaller one to the left. Sorry for mechanical ignorance so any help would be appreciated. One other comment, I hate the oil dipstick in the merc engine. Cant see the oil level the dipstick because its so thin. There is oil on It but cannot see it. Also my boat is still in the so called break in period.

Ahh, clean oil, put on those cheeters and get in the correct lighting, not easy on a sunny day. If you don't have closed cooling, you don't have a recovery bottle, or a heat exchanger cap, that simple.

I'd have to look into my order forms, but I'm pretty sure closed cooling was/is not even an option on that boat. In other words, no coolant recovery bottle and no heat exchanger. Your "heat exchanger" is the huge body of water you're sitting in. That's not to say it couldn't of been added at some point, but I don't think it was an "original" option. As far as the oil goes - it's just the fact that you have super clean oil - be glad for that!

Yes, that makes sense. One less thing for me to maintain. Thanks for the reply. Very helpful. Also I did have on the cheaters when checking the oil. My truck has that same dipstick, and it drives me crazy. Never had the oil get that black on either engine, but my boat has only 15 hrs on it.

Being in WI you should not have to worry about to much salt in your water either :) so need for a closed system. IMHO

If you lay a paper towel and or rag against your dipstick and pull it away without swiping up or down, you'll see your oil level without "cheaters"!
