I just wanted to let everyone know about something I stumbled across on FB SeaRay owners page. There's a great guy on there making Lithophanes of boats. I sent him a PM and asked if he would make one of my boat. We talked all though out the process and he was great to work with and I think it turned out prefect. He has a FB page called "Doug's Lithophane Magic". All the info about them is on his page and pictures of his work. Here are a couple pics of the one he did of my boat.

so is that a lampshade (since it needs backlighting)?
No, it's basically just a curved piece of plastic made from a 3D printer. It can be sat in a window sill or just about anywhere there is light behind it. It doesn't really take a lot of light for the image to appear. I plan on setting it on the shelf in the aft cabin because I have lights there that should back light it really well. The middle pic is it just sitting on my island in the kitchen with the lights over the island turned on. The third pic is it held up to a lamp so I think the more light the more detail. I just thought it was neat and something different.

My son and I started recently playing in the 3d printing space (as a hobby). We've done a few lithophane prints. I need to dig through boating pics and convert them......it is very cool stuff

same thing here.....received a 3d printer as a gift, been messing around with it and I realized you can print a 3d picture from any regular photograpgh GIF. It is very cool and seems to work best from black and white converted photos.

It prints the darker shades to a thicker dimension which keeps the light from shining thru as easily and really gives it a cool effect.
Can be done on any 3d printer as it is the slicing program that does all the work.
