I am in the process of removing my Weber carbs and replacing them with Edelbrock 1409's. From what I have learned this is a direct replacement for the Weber square bore.

The new carbs come with electric chokes that will have to be wired in. What is a good power source to get the 12V? I was told it should be from something that will switch on with the ignition. I was thinking starter solenoid? not sure if this is the correct source.

I have also read that fuel pressure may be an issue. Anyone know if I would need to put some type of regulator on the fuel lines?

Sorry if this has been talked before. (search found nothing) Im sure Im not the only one that has done this swap.

Thanks in advance.

I put an Eldebrock on my 1992 to 290 DA. I went with the 1410 because I had the larger 7.4 engine. I ran a wire directly to ignition switch. This is the correct way to do it.

The new carb with electric choke was a big improvement over the old, tired Weber

I had to use an adapter plate between the new carb and manifold, not sure if you need one or not.

Use the positive side of the coil, I don't believe there's any switched power at the starter solenoid other than the crank circuit.

Edelbrock advises against using the coil for power.

Quint, when you switched did you have any issues with starting after it had been sitting for over a wek? The Ouadrajets would leak down thus making it a little more hard statring. How was the performance compaired to your old Webber. Thanks

Started and ran much better. No noticeable leak down problem.

It is a carbed engine, so a few pre-start throttle pumps may be in order.

Did you run this all the way to the Key switch? Or is there a place down stream from the key switch I should be looking for?

I really liked the Webers when I put them on my Formula, but they were a bear to start until I put electric fuel pumps in. With the electric pumps, it was like having EFI, just turn the key, and when you hear the pressure build up (fuel pump slows down), give two quick throttle pumps, and turn the key to start. The engine would fire right up.

The Weber/Carter/Edelbrocks can be a real bear to start otherwise. I think Sea Ray experienced this when they switched to the Weber from the Q-Jet in the early 90's. I believe they started using electric fuel pumps to eliminate the hard start as well.

As far as an adapter, a lot of the intakes just have a big open square bore to them, and you can bolt any carb on. The problem with adapter plates can be that, in some cases, they may have a passage narrower than the carb bore, and your venturi effect is then happening in the adapter, and not in the carb where it should be.
