I don’t know that mentioning the race of the criminal is necessary, with one key point: if he/she hasn’t been apprehended yet, then it’s valuable information to report along with additional details of the person’s appearance. But I don’t need to know (and doesn’t do anything to help or hurt the story) the race of the perp.

Are we avoiding using race in the news anymore? You asking the question probably answers it for you.

As for looking at stats, it’s too simple to say minorities are committing most of the crimes. Does being black make someone more likely to be a criminal? Or is it that he’s addicted, is poor, has no education or skills, no companies nearby to hire him, lack of self worth/discipline, etc.? I think these are the reasons people commit crime, not because of the color of their skin. I wish they’d report crime stats correlated more with employment status, education level, stuff like that. Why is it blacks that seem to experience these conditions more than whites? Instead, what we’d report on the news is that “a high school dropout” shot someone, instead of a black man. Maybe then we could address the real causes of crime ... none or which are skin color.

I was not judging you. What I wrote is NOT my opinion, it is my synopsis of the current standard definition for a racist. I never said I agree with it.

All human’s have bias, based on our personal experiences with people unlike ourselves. We are also affected by what we read and view in the news.

I unfortunately did grow up in a racist neighborhood. We grew up calling each other various names based on what country our grandparents and parents emigrated from. But, we were best of friends - it was the norm for how us boys and young men picked on each other.

Unfortunately, there was real racism (hate), in my neighborhood, mostly from ignorance. I am glad I got out of that neighborhood with common sense enough to know there are bad and good people in all races, ethnicity's, nationalities, religions, and political affiliations.
 
I don't mind them not mentioning race as long as they never mention race. Conversely, if they do mention race, they should always do so.

What I do mind is their selective use of race in various reports, intended to rile up one group or the other, rather than allow people to come to their own conclusions.

The issue is that journalistic integrity has become an oxymoron.

I like to use the sidewalk test. I'm walking down the middle of the street. On one sidewalk is a white dude with a hoody, pants down around his ass and all hunched over. On the other sidewalk is a black guy with a suit on with his shoulders back looking proud. I'm moving over to the sidewalk with the black guy every time. It's not about white or black to me, it's about how you present yourself. If you want to look like a thug, then I will think you are a thug...period.

I coach high school baseball and every year I have to take online course from our state baseball association regarding concussions, first aid, etc. This year they added one called "implicit bias". I had to sit through 30 minutes of being told by people that don't know me that I am racist by birth. Every example given was a white male coach or teacher being "biased" towards a person of color or of the feminine gender. There was not one example of the reverse. So basically the course they presented was itself implicitly biased. I told my athletic director that I will not ever take that course again.

This new style of music is about black on black murders. Drilling refers to killing someone and the frequent use of the "N-word" adds to the excitement the rapper hopes to create.
