the current line of bottom paint on the back half of the boat is not high enough. If i raise it, i would be painting on the decal. Should i do that or just leave it be? also i was thinking of just raising the back half. Of course that would give me a tapered looking decal on the transom end of boat. wonder if that would look funny...What to do here? 96 sundancer 270.

I assume when you say "decal" you're referring to the stripe? If so, I did the same on mine. Raised the anti-foul 1-1/2" and redid the stripes at the same time.

It's your boat so do what you wish.....but bottom painting over the boot stripe will look like crap. I'd venture a guess the stripe is starting to look long in the tooth, so here is an opertinity to replace it and move the bottom paint up.

I've found a heat gun works best to remove the old decal. See if a sign maker can help you make the color combination of the boat.

Sad, if you're using a heat gun, I've had the best luck using it on low heat and heating up the decal only to the point where it can be pulled away from the gelcoat. Any more than that and you're likely to end up with a bazillion tiny bits of decal.

I just did this. A couple things,

1) remove the stripe, the paint wont stick well to the stripe and will chip off. I used 3M eraser wheels, it makes the quickest work of the stripe. You'll need 1.5 or so of them to do both sides.

2) Your current paint likely has a barrier coat. I decided not to add one to raise the waterline and if you look close there is a small step between the old paint and new but it doesn't bother me.

3) tape the new line, scuff fiberglass with scotch brite or 150-200 grit sandpaper, then clean with acetone and paint. Mine came out great

I just realized your asking if you should paint over your stripe. Absolutely not! I removed my stripes and then raised them.

Each their own i guess, as I had a good experience with a heat gun. You need to experiment and get into a rythem of how much heat to apply. I agree it is not much, but applying heat is key. I was pulling long sections off clean with the glue on the sticker, and not the boat.
