Communication issues with 8.1’s

That harness is more than just Smartcraft. The keyswitch and other things are a part of it. I would take a look to see if you are getting a voltage dropout on the Red wire in this diagram. The keyswitch may just be the culprit. Also the purple wire comes from the lanyard safety switch which supplies the power to the keyswitch. If any of that power gets interrupted both the Smartcraft instruments as well as the engine will react.

All I keep hearing in my head is that you have a power supply issue to the Smartcraft system so that no codes will be set and it will work intermittently. I had suggested jumper wires before for both the ground and + wires which would bypass the key switch and provide a solid +/- connection for the Smartcraft. If you don't want to do this....okay but at least put a DVM on the + wire that goes from the key switch to the Smartcraft module.

Pretty sure you are going to see it go to zero when the Smartcraft display goes blank. If it doesn't ......that tells you that the Smartcraft system itself has a problem.

As you know I reconnected the 10 pin comm to the helm (both motors) and disconnected the two connections on the bottom of Smart Craft, no surprise that gauges didn’t work. Reconnected Smart Craft last night - all gauges worked and so far no Starboard on/off (for now). Taking your advise to test or provide a +/- jump wire, would I do that on Smart Craft helm connection (bottom of SCraft) ? Per ttmott’ s wire diagram above (A)RED+ (B)Black- (F)Purple+ on 10 pin connector #9 ??

Just a quick update. After changing the com cables the boat alarmed a few times. I've had her out on 3 occasions where I ran her for over 4 hours each. No alarms. I'm not sure why but so far so good. Someone also sent me an article about this exact issue with his boat. I can pass it on to you if you are interested.

after disconnecting and reconnecting wires on bottom of smartcraft it has been a great summer with no issues. I still believe the issue is with +|- pin but haven’t had time to look. Love the ability to go fast again.

I feel all your pain and thank you for documenting your troubleshooting , I am dealing with exact same issue now on my 05’ 320 mx6.2 mpi horizons. 10 pin engine harness with the sc5000 display. I have been combing through connections points. Curious how you made out this past month after re seating your connections? Are you still cruising without the windshield wiper gauges beeping?

After changing the smart craft com cables it acted up a very short time. I've been cruising all summer with NO issues. Hopefully all this trouble shooting will help you with your fix. Good luck

Still reporting no issues after re seating smart craft connectors at the helm. No beeps, no RPM surge and no gauge on/off’s. It’s been a great summer and burned a lot of fuel.
