Comment on OEM oil filter

I use WIX 51060 oil filters on the mains and 36918 on the Westerbeke. Engines are expensive. Oil and filters are relatively cheap. Might as well use the best. I've not found better than Wix.

I just changed mine and use the HP Merc filter. I will cut into it after the next change and take a look at it. I will say the old standard merc filter that was on the boat collapsed when I put the filter wrench on it. Very thin metal

For those of you who are using Merc filters, buy the Quicksilver equivalent. Same filter less money. I change many filters , and have been using Quicksilver on all the Merc powered customers boats. I have heard Fram is one of the cheapest made filters. I go to Trade Shows and Seminars from different manufacturers and one that impressed me was Mallory Marine. We actually got to see the difference of filters cut open. There is a difference.

I am not qualified to comment on the quality of any oil filters, however I can comment on my boating history. I have a 2001 Sea Ray 270DA with a 7.4 Mercruiser. I have always used Mercruiser 25W-40 oil and Mercruiser oil filters. The boat has 370 hours and I have not had one problem with the engine.

I also have a 1986 21 foot Glassmaster with a 5.7 Mercruiser that I use for water skiing and lake cruising. I have always used Havoline 20W-50 oil and those dreaded orange Fram oil filters from Walmart. This boat is now 26 years old and the engine has around 1400 hours. It does not use any oil and I have never had a single engine problem - period. Last summer I had to replace the valve cover gaskets. The innards of the engine were as clean as new.

I am the second owner of an immaculate original 1966 17 foot Glassmaster with a 2.5L 110HP Mercruiser. This Mercruiser is so old that it was painted white at the factory and the stern drive does not have power trim and tilt. The boat is 46 years old and I cannot even imagine how many hours it has been run. The original owner always used Havoline straight 30W oil. When I bought the boat in 1999, I switched to Havoline 20W-50 oil. This boat has always used either NAPA oil filters or the dreaded Fram oil filters from Walmart. It still runs like a sewing machine and uses no oil what-so-ever.
