Boat is Sea Ray 315 (280 in the US) with coloured hull (blue). It looks (and feels) like the hull is prepainted from Sea Ray. There is an extra layer of "something" on the part of the hull that is below the waterline.

Do you use bottom paint on top of this ?

The boat is in saltwater.

Sounds like bottom paint to me. And if it needs to be touched up, i would go that route rather than repaint the bottom if it doesnt need it. Layers of bottom paint can add a lot of weight to your boat so if it looks really bad (worn), i'd have it all sanded off and re-applied. Hope this helps

Mine was factory painted with Pettit Hydrocoat bottom paint. If yours looks like this, then it is likely the same paint. Sea Ray uses this paint on all their boats where bottom paint is specified. http://www.pettitpaint.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=11

This is a water based ablative paint and wears off as you use the boat. I really like it personally but it does come off if you trailer a boat. That's primarily due to the fact that Sea Ray does not sand the bottom before painting. Instead they spray it with something so the bottom paint will stick. If you do any touch up, first sand the affected area and then touch it up.

This photo was taken recently and this is what my bottom paint looked like after the boat was in the water (fresh water lake) for 13 months. It required only simple scrubbing with a brush when we pulled the boat out of the water.

Dave, White bottom paint? My 260DA with a blue hull came from SR with black bottom paint. Did you ask for that color? Brian

On most Searays, if you get the colored hull, you must get factory bottom paint. I have some guesses as to why but no inside knowledge.

On some boats you had to get bottom paint if you ordered V-drives versus stern drives even for white hulls. It doesn't seem that way today, they just made bottom paint standard on most of their v-drive capable boats.

I think they are trying to hide some unattractive finish work.
