Over Memorial Day 2015 we took our first long run and also our first overnight stay away from our home port of Prince William Marina, Occoquan River Virginia. We traveled down the Potomac to Coles Point Marina located south of the 301 bridge and just north of the mouth of the Potomac River. It was our first experience tying up to fix docks instead of floating docks as well.
Arrival: We headed down following two marina mates operating 340DAs. The weather was 5kts of wind out of the N. Overall it was a little choppy but not too bad. upon arrival we had to call in as the marina wasn't monitoring VHF. We were docked at C15 and they had several people on hand to help tie us up.
Check-in: Check-in was quick. Theresa took good care of us.
Docks: The marina is well protected from current and the fairways quite wide for a 28 foot boat. Even with only 1 month of boating under my belt I felt comfortable pulling in. The transients are mixed in with the locals and our neighbors were quite nice even offering the use of their hose to spray down the salt water on our hull. The docks themselves have seen better days with some of the planks crumbling when I walked on them. The finger piers were quite narrow. If given the option though the lagoon out front is a nice place to be. It has the newest floating docks and getting in and out is a breeze.
Amenities: They offer a bath house at the head of C dock that serves the entire marina. It wasn't the cleanest facility but neither the wife or I had any major complaints. Occasionally one of the stalls was out of toilet paper but a couple of hours later it would be remedied so someone was keeping an eye on it. There were plenty of places to walk the dogs and plastic bags and trash bins for the dogs were always near by. The beach was a short walk away and made for a great gathering spot. We ate dinner at the restaurant Sunday night and while the food was good the service was severely lacking. The kitchen was a little backed up but our server seemed overwhelmed. She was working both inside and outside tables. One area to note was the fuel dock. The fuel dock gets extremely crowded at times and can be tricky to hold off of as it is directly at the end of the entry channel and you have boats coming in for fuel and for parking in the marina. If there is any wind it gets even more fun. They get everything from Personal Water Craft to 86 foot yachts (M/V Moksha) showing up. There is a .10 discount on cash purchases but make sure you do the math. I picked up 30 gallons and had to correct the guys working the fuel dock.
Overall it was a great place to visit. I am spoiled I think by PWM and their amenities but would definitely venture down here again on a long weekend. I hope this review was helpful.
