Steppes onto the boat for the first time today. Survey tomorrow. Seems like amp is blown. Only base in cockpit. Turned up volume. After 30sec the component speakers blared nicely. Then they cut out. There is some sound, but crappy. To me, sounds like EQ in amp is bad? Inside cabin sounds great. Sub sounds great.

You can test the channels to make sure. I just went through this and ended up replacing amp.

Amps are fairly cheap these days, a newer one will be much smaller and much much more efficient in terms of current draw.. I say just replace it with a JL Audio 4 channel for 300 bucks

Agreed, if you can find a 5 channel it will run cooler. The one I put it is a quarter of the size. I went with a powerbass 5 channel digital amp. It was $340.

Mine did the exact same thing over the long 4th weekend. I have the exact same setup as you. The inside speakers run off that tiny amp next to it, and it does just fine.

I'm replacing the amp and cockpit speakers with Rockford. I'll have to run new power wire too.
Going with a 5 channel 1000 watt Punch amp, and new marine 6.5" in the cockpit. I'll likely replace the sub too but want to see how the 2 new pairs of higher end speakers sound first. http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/pm2652x

After that, I'm going to replace the Clarion head unit with something else... want bluetooth and wireless phone connectivity. Just don't know what yet. A marine head unit is not necessary.

That's one serious upgrade! Sucks it crapped out on you over the holiday.

I'd be happy with even the stock sound. Just gotta get it working for now. Don't have the cash to upgrade the way I'd like, so I'll just throw something in there for the time being.

Anyone know what the impedance of the stock sub and speakers are?

I understand... Every boat I get I seem to go less and less in the stereo. 12 years ago, I went insane with installs, like 4000 watts in my powerboat.

Spend a couple more bucks than the JL and go with this Alpine. It will throw enough power to the sub and it will be good if you replace the cockpit speakers in the future. These are very efficient on the power draw too.

With this amp, you can slowly upgrade the system if you like. Honestly, replacing the cockpit speakers in the future, paired with this amp would change the sound dramatically. Again, you can do it slowly over time, but start with an amp that you wont need to add to.

Just sharing some more research...for sound on the bow, I want something that is clean and out of the way... I'm going to add this with clamps to the top crossbar closest to the hardtop (above the windshield). The wire run will be minimal and only requires a small access hole out of the hardtop for the single wire. No drilling into the stainless support bars.

This will project sound forward for the bow without clunky pods or square speaker boxes. You wont even see this from the cockpit, the bar will hide it.
