Okay I am going to change out the cockpit speakers and sub this spring. I have a 2000 340da with the upgraded amp and speaker package so I don't want to drill any new holes.

That being said i need ideas on what to get. I know people will say personal preference but I would like to know what other people like in their boats.

I am also putting in a new alpine 4 channel amp to run the 6.5" cockpit speakers it is 100w rms x4. any advice would be much appreciated!!

Budget for 4 speakers and sub is around $600
Thanks,

Dave

What size sub are you going to use? Where are you going to install it? What amp will you be using to power the sub?

I have an Alpine marine head unit, Alpine PDX 100x4 marine amp powering 4 eight inch Pioneer marine coaxials. Another Alpine marine amp that runs 2 six inch auxiliary speakers that mount on the radar arch, and are detachable. ( I run these two when we are backed up to the beach for better rear projection) Then there is an Alpine PDX 600x1 mono marine amp that runs a 12" Alpine competition R series sub that is built into the helm seat, in a sealed 1.5 cubic ft enclosure. I am in the process of upgrading the sub amp to the PDX 1000x1 mono sub amp, for a little more bang.

Changed ours out with Polk Momo's a couple years ago. Had to use a sanding drum on a couple of the holes to open them up a hair but it was no big deal. They sound great. I painted the speaker grilles to match the cockpit for a factory look. I would like to split the cockpit speakers and sub up so they each have their own amp. I hooked up the new amp the same way the factory did. Bridging two channels for the sub and paralelling the other two into the four cockpit speakers.

I am also upgrading my 07 210 select with 4 6.5 inch Polk ultra marine speakers and 2 8 inch subs under the rear bench. I am ordering a Kicker 5 channel amp to run every thing. I am going with the Polk 6.5s because they are one of the few companies that make an 8 inch marine sub and I want everything to match.

JL Audio. Get two and a 10" sub now, then 2 more later.

I put 4 Polk 6.5's in and run them off of a Alpine 4 channel amp. I bought a 10 inch JL sub and a alpine 500W Alpine amp last night. I think it is going to sound great. I may purchase another set of the Polk 6.5's and put them next to the transom storage locker later this year and power them off of the head unit. I have about $800 into the 2 amps and 5 speakers.

Did you have to cut or modify in anyway?

i can't say enough about the Alpine PDX Marine line of amps. Real small, low heat output, efficient.

if you want a little extra bass in your system, take a look at this 5 channel amp:
http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/pdx-5m

they can be had much cheaper on ebay or amazon.

I had one, but moved onto a dedicated amp for just the sub.
Ended up with the PDX 4.100, PDX 600.1, along with four extra Optima Blue Tops.

Alpine 6.5 100 per pair at cartoys sound great

Great topic...I just ordered a replacement stereo for our boat. I thought it would be easier to just upgrade the Clarion stereo, helm remote and XM. I would like to do the speakers next year. Please let me know what works for your 2000 340. I also have the sub under the helm seat.

Thanks.

2nd for the Polk 6.5 inch DB651 speakers. Fit perfectly and sound great.

Scottie,
I was leaning towards JL's in my cockpit but the $$ are up there, especially if I put in 3 pairs. I have other electronics to add this spring in addition to the stereo upgrade. Are the Polks really that good? They are much more wallet friendly and could be used to tide me over until I can spend the extra $$ later. What do you think?

Check it out. My friend Bill did the same thing this year. http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38861&highlight=stereo

Okay it's between the polk and JL audio. I was wondering if I could get the model #'s for each (their websites are full of all kinds of models??) I am putting the sub under the helm bench same as it is now from factory 2 6.5" in the arch and 2 6.5" at the helm exactly where they are now. I would really like to not have to drill any holes are these drop in replacements?

Thanks Everyone for the help:smt038

OK. I know squat about sound equipment. I do no the original equipment speakers on my bridge ARE NOT waterproof!!! :smt021

So I am just looking for economical (but decent) pair of speakers (6 1/2") and a sub (10"). The radio/CD is a Clarion M5470. The specs say 120W (4 x 30). There are speakers all over the boat but I'm hoping to replace the ones at the helm only.

Help? Do I need to worry about "matching" speakers? Where is good place to buy? What should I buy?

I did my upgrade 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. I started with Rockford Fosgate replacement speakers in the arch and cockpit (4 total). I also had a 10" R F sub added under the helm seat, and a RF 500 watt amp. BUT what really woke the system up was the addition of 2 more RF in the arch placed about standing ear level. Spend almost 2K but I didn't have the upgraded sound to start.

For the money, I think the Polk line offer excellent value and sound great. That being said, I went with 4 pair of JL Audio 7.7s plus a JL sub in the cockpit and went from sounding great to impressive. The return on the substantial price difference is personnal preference.
