cockpit carpet rubber backing

My cockpit snap in carpet has a rubbber backing which is drying out. The carpet is in great condition.
Is there a solution or a coating I could brush on to stop this or a way to take it off. I would like to save the original equipment. Any suggestions. Thanks

Mine were in rough shape when I bought my boat. Some areas of the backing were completly missing, others were just dried out and flaking off. I brushes all the loose stuff off then bought a gallon of plasti dip. Did 3 or 4 coats and no more loose stuff all over the boat. Only one season on the repaired carpets so far.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking the same but was concerned it the coating would come off on the fiberglass deck. Any signs of any residue.

No signs of it coming off so far. If you search here there are a few other threads on this site talking about the same thing.

Ditto on the plasti dip, I got 2 seasons on the carpets since doing it and holding up great.
Don't be afraid give it a try!

That said, I think if I used the smoth (not textured) variety, it would have worked much better. Also, get the tan color. I got the black so any place the carpet fibers were thin, the black shows through. The tan would not.

I used a couple cans of the spray on plastic coat (sp) and it worked well. I will say though I only used it for one year and then just got new carpets anyway.
