It is not too early to be planning a trip. It takes a lot longer than you think. Look for our Charleston Trip post.

Sweet Dreams we will be down on the coast next year I am sure. The first challenge will be that weekend thing where I work. I will post all of my work weekends so that you guys can pick one of them. You guys then can have fun while I whine about working. Got to retire by the time I get to 110.

Georgetown may work. I am aware of the Hampton Inn which is OK. As far as a raft up beach not sure about where as north of Mcellanville they have gators etc. I am going north the first weekend in October and will scout the area.

There are a lot of places to dock in MB. We stayed at Barefoot Landing. Alex was real good to us while all of the shop etc were close by. A motel is just down the street.

Someone asked about too small of a boat. We used to take a 175 everywhere. Just watch your fuel and use a little common sense and it will be fine. The trip to Georgetown is very easy in a canoe with the possible exception of Charleston Harbor and Winyah bay. Just slow down if the wind is blowing.

Beufort, SC is also good. We like City Marina, the park, and the several close by hotels. Very nice town. There is a lot of shoaling about half way down so stay in the channel. Go ahead ask me how I know.

Of course there is always hanging around Charleston.

The problem we encountered last Charleston trip was that several people that wanted to attend had to tow the boat a long way, right Chuck. Lets talk about this and see what happens.

Great thread Paul. Go ahead and give us all the detail info before you find out what weekends you have to work.:)grin:) Ok tell us how you know about the shoaling, if you had just listened to Jane you would not have had a problem. With so many neat places on the SC the coast we may have to do a couple trip. Yes the tow to the coast is long, but it sure is worth it:thumbsup: I really liked the lake/river/coast trip. It was pretty neat not having to worry about flushing the engine before the long haul home. I'm hopping the real estate market is going to turn (SOON). We need a trip, I've already laid out some coastal routes in Mapsource.

I saved this thread so I can keep track of it. My wife and I are avid campers, so traveling a few states just to get away and see something different sounds right up our alley.

We would need to find a launching ramp and hotel. And it wouldn't matter what city or town we launch from.

I take it there are no plans to go out in the ocean?

Do you guys use marine radio's to keep in contact? I'm thinking about buying one next year.

I'm sure we won't be out more than 12 miles. Just kidding:lol:

Yes you should have a VHF.

You guys can more than likely count me in once school is done. Time permitting, I'm also planning on hitting the Destin/PCB area again. Have any destinations in mind Chuck?

Zeppi,

Try looking at an ICOM or Standard Horizon handheld.

Some ideas that have been mentioned...
Georgetown><Mytrle
Chas><Myrtle
Santee>< Chas

Also think Chas><Beaufort or Beaufort>< Savannah would be great. They are at least on our list even if its not a group! Wasn't there a group that went to Beaufort last year following the Chas Aquapalooza?

SeaRide, how long a haul is Destin?

It's about 10.5 hours driving time with the boat in tow from my house to the extreme west end of PCB. That includes fuel stops and stopping a couple of times for the rug rats.

How about a "Santee-Cooper Lake to Charleston to Myrtle Beach" and back trip. That way some could do the whole thing and others could meet up along the way?

Ok, typed this already and got error message. Anyway, IMHO I think that would be too expensive and require too many days off from work for alot of people. Would be nice but it -would be a 5-6 day trip. Personally, I would like to spend just as much or more time relaxing and hanging out than cruising that many hours. Its two tanks of gas for just the lake to Chas trip. Then once you get to chas, come up the ICW to georgetown then myrtle, you still would have to go all the way back to chas and up the cooper river again to load the boat up.

One destination would be best. My wife really likes to have time to relax while the boat is not moving. Myrtle Beach is 12 hours round trip moving right along with out any traffic and two boats. With a group of boats we would have to slow down or the wakes offf the sea walls will be pretty wicked for the docked boats and those in the rear.

I'm with you Paul. However, we use the downtime to let the kids burn off some excess energy. 3.5 hrs. is about the maximum amount of time they'll spend on the boat without going nuts.

As long as the weekend works for us you know we'll do our best to be there. The Charleston trip last year was fantastic and a wonderful memory (at least until I blew my engine :smt089 ) and I've been wanting to do it with the Admiral next time around. We would like to run as much of the ICW as is practicable, but I ditto the need for a lot of relax time too.... I don't want to spend the whole time burning fuel ~ I actually enjoy the time just hanging out as much or more than the time spent on the run.

SeaRide,
Is someone also planning a PCB/Destin trip? that would be really neat. We've camped at St.Andrews SP for spring break in 05 and 06 and loved it. We could launch from there and or stay the night. Of course it takes us about 18ish hours to get there.

I will be checking into VHF radios over the next few months.

I am not aware of anyone planing a trip to Destin/PCB. However, there are several members from the panhandle. I met up with a high school/college buddy. He towed his Cobalt to Destin. We spent a couple of days in the St. Andrews/Shell Island area and a couple of days around Destin. I also met up with a couple of CSR members during my stay.

We would be interested. Our plans will depend on the housing market turn around. If we don't pick back up in the early spring next year, we will be holding our trips to a minimum.

If you guys come north, say Myrtle Beach, count me in.

You two need to just make way to the Triangle area, (Raleigh, Durham, Cary etc) we're actually doing pretty good here as long as you keep prices below 450k and keep inventory low. I mainly build in the 300-350 range and have yet to have a home sit more than 60 days from completion. I did scale back to about 1/2 production starting last August since we saw it coming but, I have actually enjoyed this years slow down, been able to take plenty of time off unlike the last 5 years. I feel like it will be around this time next year before things start turning back towards normal. I am working with other builders and investors now to take down lots because when it turns around, its going to be a scramble since there are no subdivisions being cut in these days. The one good outcome from all of this is that its weeding out all of the fly by night outfits and pushing the nationals out. SB
