While out on the water yesterday, boat was running fine, etc. After leaving marina, went up on plane no problem. After awhile, I slowed it down to cruise and enjoy the scenery. Decided to throttle up again to plane, boat lagged and heard semi loud clunking / clicking coming from either drive or engine. Throttled down and waiting 10 seconds. Tried again and got on plane no problem. Problem did not resurface remainder of day. Thoughts on sound? I have the mercruiser 305 with B3. It was in a choppy area when I tried getting on plane...could have been straining drivetrain, not too sure. U joint? All gauges read normal and drive lube is at normal levels.

Sounds like you hit something...

I agree sounds like you hit something.

Maybe...was trying to get on plane for 30-40 ft (or more) and heard the noise 4-5 times. Like I said it didnt do it the next two times I tried to get on plane. Will monitor this weekend.

Is it me or is it easier for me to get on plane from a hole shot / dead stop vs. cruising at 8-10 knots and then trying to throttle up?? I assume this is due to the plowing effect when cruising at a slightly higher speed?
