Any ideas on how to remove the black backing from the carpeting that has welded itself to the gel coat on the fiberglass decking????

The pressure washer worked pretty well, got the carpet and edging pretty clean. The backing is another story, though. I was able to get some of the bad baxcking off the carpet but still have a lot left. In the areas where it hadn't started to come off, the pressure washer did nothing.

I'm very interested in others' methods for removing the black stuff from the gelcoat, too. I have a lot to remove.

for that I use the Mr. Cleans magic eraser...:) works great.

for cockpit carpets we take our out in the summer, but I lay mine out in the driveway and vacuum it and then shampoo it with a carpet shampooer (is that a word?) then when I rinse I put a little downey fabric softener in the water and it keeps them smelling nice and fresh all the time.:smt001

Has anyone ever tried laundry detergent? I do that with the floor mats in my Jaguar as well as my Dodge truck. They look brand new after I'm done. I use warm water, rub it in by hand, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinse with a garden hose. No residue left behind and they stay clean looking for quite a while.

coordinate with others on your dock/ in your marina; spread them all out on the docks; call Stanley Steamer and they will do a bunch in a short period of time. They do great work. They have the truck-mounted equipment, not the weak, portable ones.

My 2 cents worth!

I have the same problem with the carpet backing sticking to the fiberglass surface and scrub the stuff off with a heavy brush and lot's of elbow grease. There is another thread that talks about covering the backing with the stuff you use on truck beds, but I'm not so sure about going that route when I probably just need new carpets. For now, I just soak the area with some spray-nine (no water) before scrubbing and let it sit, then I scrub...It's much easier. After I rince and dry the area, I put down a "sure step" from auroramarine so that the carpet backing has a harder time sticking and yet are still secured on the deck. :smt021
