I've stripped the bottom of my boat of all the bottom paint down to a barrier coat that was previously applied. Of course in some spots I have accidentally went through the barrier and exposed the gelcoat underneath. I have ordered a gallon of interlux interprotect 2000 to add an additional coat and cover the gelcoat spots. Obviously while sanding the paint there is a considerable amount of dust that settled on the pre existing barrier coat. I'm curious that if I use a solvent such as Interlux 202 if it would compromise the existing barrier coat or if that would be ok to clean with than apply the new coat.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you just want to remove dust, why not just wash it with soap and water and let it dry? I don't think I'd use solvent but a call to Interlux would be a good idea before you do anything.

I'd second a call. When I was doing the barrier coat on Bella I discovered there was not only specific time windows between coats, but also a time period after the job was done when touch ups could no longer be done without additional prep work.

You might need to find out if there is anything you need to do before overcoating the existing paint. Last thing you want is for the new top coat to start peeling off!

Thanks for the advice gentleman. I will try soap and water first to see if it takes the dust off. I actually spoke to an Interlux rep at the AC boat show this past weekend and he had recommended 202 to clean. After reading about 202 and what it is intended for it appears that it is used for bare fiberglass so I wanted to ask around on here. I will reach out to Interlux to make sure and confirm. My biggest fear would be after all the sanding and painting to have to strip it again to the gelcoat!!.

I just got off of the phone with interlux and the gentleman said that soap and water would be ok and that if that does not work than 202 will not harm the existing coat that is on there. He explained that the barrier coat works on a mechanical bond so as long as the surface it is being applied to has been sanded with 80 grit than it will adhere.
