I've got some black residue from belts and other stuck on stuff under the engines. I really want to make my bilge sparkle. Going to get a new scrub brush today. What chemical should I use to clean it?

I used Dawn and it nice job of cleaning most of my bilge. You may need a solvent for some spots and Bar Keepers Friend for others but the Dawn doesn't seem to discolor anything, it cuts the grease or oil, and suspends the grease or oil to get it out of the bilge. That is why pros use it for oil and gas spills in the lake. Degreasers like Simple Green do cut the oil but do not have the ability to suspend it as well as the Dawn.

I use a 1 gallon fertilizer sprayer with a metal wand to squirt diluted simple green in tough to reach spots. Then scrub with long handled scrub brush and squirt with clear water.

I do the same sprayer as above but I use "Purple Power" from anywhere you shop. Walmart, Sams, Oreillys, Autozone...etc.. Lots of ventilation and don't soak your hands in it!

I squirt some Dawn in and about 2 gallons of water into bilge and go for a ride before I pull it out for the year. Get home and pull the plug and rinse. The bilge usually comes pretty clean the tough stains get scrubbed with Tide.

Ditto ... also use a sprayer with vinegar and water

Mineral Spirits in a pressured sprayer. Spray everywhere, let sit ofr 10-15 monites then rinse with water. If it's really greasy you may need to spray it on, scrub and then rinse off.

Westley's Bleach white. Its a white wall cleaner. Does an amazing job without a lot of scrubbing. Spray it on, wait 30 seconds, scrub with a sponge them rinse it off. If you have old/ heavy dirt, may take an extra application. It will make a white bilge sparkle!

Barkeepers Friend and a touch of Iron Out with a scrub brush did a great job.

Now it's as clean as my last boat that was trailered.

wow. that looks great. I just used a power washer on the widest jet angle with wide passes. took some gymnastics work to get under the twins but it looks so much better. i had to use a coat hanger and keep bending it into different shapes to push some old leaves through the ports in the stringers and out the lower drain hole. it was a huge pain in the pooper but we just bought the boat this year and would never leave any part of the boat looking like it was when we bought it...

Doesn't a pressure washer splash water all over the place? Would you get water in places you can't reach to dry?

Looks great. I use really hot water and simple green.
