I added an Aux in jack at the helm, and connected to the back of the Clarion head unit with RCA cables.

If the head unit is on FM, AM or Aux then you can hear what's hooked up through this RCA cable no matter what, as long as the volume is higher than zero. So say you set it to an FM station, as you raise the volume on the Clarion, the FM station keeps getting louder but the RCA/Aux in sounds stay at the same level. And I only hear the RCA from the 2 cabin speakers not the cockpit speakers. I can hear the FM or AM radio just fine from all 6 speakers.

Kinda stumped here! There were two sets of RCA inputs behind the deck: one pair had rubber plugs over the end and I assumed those were for a subwoofer out (I don't have the sub option). So I hooked into the other pair of inputs and I get the above

you could be onto something! These red wires?

I see this now in the service manual. I was plugged into the gray wires since the red were up out of sight

That was it, thanks!

I had tried those inputs before but I couldn't hear anything. Now it works after a combo of needing the Aux Out volume set high enough on my satellite player, and also Aux Sensitivity set to high on the Clarion.
