My stereo lights up thinks it is playing but no sound anyone have ideas, I have looked for a wiring diagram but of course it is not there

Could it be the amp? Maybe the power to the amp is off thus no sound will eminate. I would try and see if a DC circuit is off somewhere that may be the power. There also could be a problem with the relay wire from the stereo to the amp which tells it to go on but I would start with the simple stuff first. I'm not familiar with the set-up on your specific boat, sorry.
My 40MY has switches for the salon and cockpit speakers located with the bank for the salon lighting. If those are off, there will be no sound in either place no matter how the control head is set. You also need to make sure the control head is set to an active source you are sure would produce sound.

I was hopeing it was something like a switch but have a seperate unit for the cockpit area thanks

If one of your speaker wires are shorted together you will have this exact problem.

I had the original Clarion that came with my 480 MY and have since upgraded, but tdschafer is correct. There is a wire that runs from the clarion to the amp and it sends a signal from the head unit to the amp and tells it to power on. If you pull out the fridge in the cockpit you will see the wiring from the head unit and the amp is located behind the dash where the SeaRay Navigator chart plotter is mounted. I had an led that came on when the amp was powered on, but it was hard to see during daylight. The amp DC power comes from the hinged panel underneath the helm. You want to look for the "Stereo" breaker on the Control Station Breaker panel attached to the hinged door. If the stereo is not the original, then look at the fuses marked accessory, as they may have powered the new equipment from there. I also have a pdf file of the owners manual that contains the electrical wiring diagram if you need it. You can PM me for more info.
