I upgraded the head unit to Clarion CMD5 it came with a remote which is basically useless because of where the unit is mounted in the cabin. I am considering adding a IR repeater like this one. has any one used some thing like this? do they actually work?

I recently upgraded to the CMD5. I had a XMD 3(?) and just hooked up the existing remote. It was a 2004 model. Everything works great inclduing the IPod. Don't know if you have that option.

yes, they do work, but you may consider optional wired remote (with lcd display) installed on helm

I use the repeaters at home. The IR receivers can be sensitive to sunlight, so be careful where you mount it. If you had an XMD3 before, your helm remote should probably still work.

I have a wired remote and it works, I would like to use the IR remote from the beach, dock etc...

Does the CMD5 need any special adaptors to be able to use an IPOD or does the IPOD plug into an AUX or its own switch?

You can use the RCA inputs in the back to a 3/8" jack to the iPod. There is a mod/input adapter available if you want full control via wired remote and MP3 song tags on the face but I've got no idea what part number or functionality. got to crutchfield or clarion online.. good luck

I have a 2003 320 Sundancer and I just replaced my XMD1 with a CMD5. I bought 2 new remote and replaced the old remote on the helm and now want to wire a new remote on the transom. Has anyone done so and I would appreciate any suggestions on placement and your experience in the installation? Thank you

Try the second one on the end of the extension wire before you install it. I bought a newer style Clarion wired remote, but the display screen will not work after you put it on the 25' extension cable. I reversed them at the helm - I temporarily put the old remote on the extension and the new one on the short wire. They both worked.

For now, I have not installed the new remote. I may put it at the helm and add the old one to the transom. What I did buy though, is an RF Remote the size of a key fob. I put the receiver in the transom on a 25' extension cable. It works great! We labeled it "Shell's Remote" to go with the boat "Shell's Island." I put the Klipsch outdoor loudspeakers on the swim platform and handed my wife the remote (Shelli) at the beach. She picked her favorite music throughout the day. It was awesome. It has all of the same functions as the helm remote.

I can get you the key fob remote and receiver delivered in the US for $140. I only found it in England, but they couldn't deliver. I found the manufacturer and can get them for anyone who wants one.

Here is the link. It was $146 for me delivered, plus the foreign exchange charge on the credit card. DON'T ORDER IT AT THAT SITE - THEY CAN'T DELIVER. Then, you go through 6 weeks (so far) of trying to get the charges reversed, all of them, and then they try to sell you the other (wired) remotes in place....

Let me know and I'll get them for you.

Good suggestion to test the secound remote as I do have the 25" extension. Now I just have to decide where to mount it in the transom area?

Just to let everyone know, if you upgrade to the cmd5 from an older clarion unit, the non lcd remotes will work just fine with the same cable. The lcd remotes will work, but the lcd will not come on. This has nothing to do with the length of the cable, but the type of cable. Apparently Clarion makes two different types of cables for these remotes, and even though they have the same number of pins, the material in the cables is different. It takes a special cable to make the lcd screen work, even though they look the same. I wish I could remember model numbers to help everyone out, but I cannot. Sorry. I just did a major overhaul of my stereo system, and this was one of the many issues I encountered. The info is in a forum connected to Clarion's website if I remember correctly.

Interesting. So what you're saying is that if I get a different type of cable, I can add the second (new) remote to the transom. Thanks!

John,
Yes, you can change the wire running to the remote, and the lcd will work. If I run across the numbers for the cable I will send them to you. How stupid is it that they make two cables that look identical and have the same plugs, but are different?

How expensive is it that they make 2 cables...

OK. I am finding the MWRXCRET which is an extension cable for MW1/2, and the M101RXC-RET which is an extension cable for, but not limited to, CMRC1 and the CMRC2.

So, I assume these are the two different kinds?

EDIT: This is my new remote: http://www.etronics.com/p-37308-cla...c1bss-marine-remote-control.aspx?svbname=462&

This is in the text: NOTE: This remote does NOT come with cable. You will need a Clarion M101RXC-RET extension cable

I'll have to wait until I get home to determine which cable I bought.

I wonder if I bought ther wrong one? http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?Source=googlebase&ProductID=20879

John, I would like to know how that turns out once you get home and see which cable you have. Once I removed 1/2 of my cabin panels and found out what a chore it was going to be to replace my factory remote cable to the helm, I scrapped the lcd remote idea. I have only read this info on a Clarion forum, and would like to know if they know what they're talking about! If not, I might end up getting the lcd after all, I sure would like to know what I'm doing when I'm pushing those buttons!

It sounds like you need to keep shopping. There are versions with LCD screens available to match your cables, I'm pretty sure.
