Hello I'm a new boater just inherited a 2001 Sea Ray Sundeck 240 from my dad.. had to do a lot of repairs so far and now a new curious thing is happening in idle and at speed I hear a chirping noise that I assumed was a belt slip or pulley bearing but it sounds to me like it is coming from the rear of the engine it doesn't sound like a knock that I heard in a previous post I don't smell burnt rubber so would it be my engine coupler or could I possibly just have a bad gimbal bearing? When I took the drive off The The gimbal bearing is a non-greasable part and it felt like it spung easily The shaft went in without issue... And I was able to push the drive on all the way and then just screwed on the nuts on the outside I'm hoping it's the gimbal bearing and not the coupler but what are you all's opinions on my issue? Thanks in advance captain of For Play

Does the noise happen when you turn the wheel, when you go in and out of gear, accelerating or once at speed and cruising? What series of events or conditions make it happen?

Take the serp belt off and run the engine (cold) for a minute. Still got a noise?

Honestly I haven't thought to take the belt off and try because that would definitely remove the pulleys as a contributing factor I will have to try that next time I am able

The noise happens at all times when the engine is running whether at speed or idle I've looked into it possibly being an engine coupler and I don't think that's it because from everything I've read and saw an engine coupler is basically like a motor mount you got a ”bolt" in the center and it's surrounded by rubber no bearings to chatter. So now I'm left with it either being the gimbal bearing or one of the pulleys I'm thinking power steering pump even though it doesn't sound like a car power steering pump going up not positive though but I have been running it at least four times with the chattering and other than it being annoying it hasn't caused any issues so far....

Alternator bearings will "chirp" before going south, usually.

Gimbal bearings typically growl, not chirp.
