In my series of posts about Catalina, I forgot to mention our favorite destination, Cherry Cove. On the leeward side of the Island, Cherry Cove is close to the Isthmus and the little town of Two Harbors. On shore is Camp Cherry Valley, run by the Boy Scouts since the 1920’s. There are a group of trees in the canyon behind the cove, including the Catalina Cherry, that really make it beautiful. Also Lion's Head, a rock formation, shelters the cove from the common afternoon winds. Unlike Avalon, the Cherry Cove harbor master who serves the 99 moorings allows boats of any size to hook up to the moorings close to the beach.
We have spent three weekends at Cherry Cove now since August and we really enjoy it. Very peaceful, yet it is a quick dinghy ride to Two Harbors for supplies, trash deposits or a beverage or two. We just wrapped up 10 weekends in a row on the Island. I think we might take the next few weeks off to do a little maintenance and some projects at home, but when we go back it will be to Cherry Cove.
