Bill,
Although I would agree that if your comfort level is not there, then you shouldn't take the trip. However, you'll have some time to get the hang of the boat when season starts and if you have a group to travel with it'll make it even easier when you follow someone experienced with local knowledge.

Here's a thread I had when we made the trip from Huntington to NJ (see post #46) http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16358&highlight=huntington&page=5

BTW, I don't think that currents should be a concern for you. With your engines the worst that could happen is you'll loose couple of MPH. I was doing this trip on my friend's sailboat with 29HP motor with prop of a size of a office desk fan , that's when the currents make the difference. I think one of the biggest ticket items is getting to know how to dock her in a new marina with possible current and wind, if some happen to be present at the time.

Bill,

Use the interactive chart retrieval tool on the NOAA site to select all the charts for your area for downloading. It is based on a map of the USA with the area each chart covers shown as an outline. Then just click on the outline to order the chart. That will build a list of chart numbers. The same chart numbers are used for the electronic versions as for the paper versions. So you can then take the list of chart numbers from the download tool and order them in hard copy.

Thanks Henry, i'm on it this morning 8:47 am :thumbsup:

Good morning,
A group trip is exactly what we hope for, to follow, learn, and get the experience. We look forward to the first month as you say to hang on the boat, meet my neighbor and just chill. And most important learning is what we most want to do at first.

Hi Bill, just about every year, SS3 runs a Chelsea Piers overnighter - so your idea of a flotilla should come to fruition. Give a call or email to Nicole at SS3 and she can let you know when they might be planning this year's run.
Definitely safety in numbers; one of the great things about SS3 is the events and the staff really helping everyone out.
See you in a few months...
Keith

I bought a netbook, usb GPS receiver, downloaded the charts from NOAA and downloaded seaclear II for free to backup the GPS receiver on the boat. This year I am going to hook the netbook to the GPS so I can move data back and forth. This gives me 2 devices tracking to cut out errors.
