I am chartering a cat in the BVIs in April of this year. I wanted to know from the people who have sailed there if A/C was needed in the BVIs in April. Thanks

I have bareboated in the BVI's on sailboats a dozen times on mono hulls up to 47'. Never had A/C except on the dock. We have been down in April several times and also at the end of May. Assuming you have some fans in the cabins and good ventilation you should be fine. The trades will be blowing 10-15 kts and night temps in the mid 70's. Have fun. Don't miss Cow Wreck on Anegeda, and the Soggy Dollar and One Love on Jost Van Dyke.

I would say that if you have a choice, get A/C. All of the anchorages are on the leeward sides of the islands. There isn't a lot of airflow, thus they make good anchorages. Get too close to shore, and it's good swimming and an easy dinghy ride in, but there are mosquitos and stagnant air. Get too far our, and it can be a little rough, but no bugs, better airflow...

I would anchor close and turn the A/C on to sleep, personally. We didn't have it last time, and it was hot, sticky, and sailboats make a lot of noises.

We had charted sailboat with no AC in January (used Sunsail in BVI). From what I recall it wasn't too bad at all. The only time I can see it being an issue is in case of rainy night when you have to close the ports.

You don't need A/C when you sleep on deck.

But of course. . . most cars in the 1950's didn't have A/C either. I would probably be a nice option if available at a reasonable price. Last time I rented was about 5 years ago. I don't recall A/C as available even on 46' cat's. But of course. . that was 5 years ago.

I'm jealous...why not rent a power cat ?

We looked at both the power and sail cats. They have 20% off sail cats right now. No discount on the power. I can't wait to go back. We rented a villa on St. John in Oct. While we were there we rented a 26' power cat for one day. We are looking at two cats right now. The one is older with no air and the other one is a 2008 with air.

Had but didn't need in March on a sail cat. Enjoy!

Not to hijack, but if theres any interest in a future group charter check out ""Yes, Dear" on voyagecharters.com and PM me.

I think it depends on how much ground you want to cover. In the BVI's. . . everything seemed to be within a 2-3 hour sail. So in a power cat. . .you get there in 1/2 hour? Who cares? Plus you have to run the engines? Not much benefit for the extra fuel bill!

The last time I sailed down there, we did St Martin/St. Bart area. That time, we had several longer jaunts under sail. We still spend most of the day, however, in the water or on the beach. The times underway seemed to be a good changeup to the routine.

Catamaran, either sail or power, are definately the way to go. I remember one trip where we had one catamaran and one 36-38' monohull - - > we definately had one or two nights where the monohull bobbed like a cork at anchor (due to high winds) and you could barely stand up, while you could cook and have a nice dinner on the catamaran.
