+1. Battery switches off converter on.

Doesn't matter if your battery switch is on or off or on batt 1, batt 2 or both. All the batteries will charge from the AC converter when it is on shore power (or generator) or when the engine is on. The battery switch is for what battery you want to power what. Nothing to do with charging. I leave batteries off if I am away from boat.

New to our 2003 280, and having same questions...if I'm on Shore Power with the AC converter on, why do I need to turn my battery on to run AC items such as lights and water pump? Shouldn't these run off converter while on shore power? We are not getting the converter. Thanks for any info!

Your cabin lights and pump are DC not AC you may have one AC light in the cabin. Your AC converter will charge your batteries and also run your DC lights and water pump and not run your batteries down. If you have a promariner converter they are designed to provide this additional current. It's a great feature! If you leave your converter off and the lights on you will find d that you run the house battery down.

Oops, made a typo :( This is what I meant to ask...on shorepower with the converter ON, shouldn't I be able to run my DC lights and water pump with out having to turn the batteries on? In my case nothing DC will come on unless the batteries are also switched on....this doesn't seem correct. I would assume the converter should operate my DC items without the batteries being on? What am I'm I missing? Thanks

Not sure why sea ray calls it a converter, clearly it's not. A battery charger is what it is.

We need a battery converter/charger for a 280 sundancer 2008. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks

My guess is that they view a Converter as being the opposite of an inverter.

Makes more sense if you look at it like an Inverter takes in 12v DC, puts out 110v AC.
A Converter does the opposite --> takes in 110v AC, puts out 12v DC (to charge batteries).

There is no denying that 12v comes in handy to charge batteries.

You are making an invalid assumption.

The 12v circuits you are wanting to run are wired to, and run off of the batteries.
If the battery switch is OFF, the batteries are disconnected from those circuits.

IF the converter is ON, then that 12v output will charge the batteries.
Whether the converter is ON or NOT, only determines if the batteries are being charged or NOT,
(it does not feed the 12v circuits).

These are two independent issues, entirely unrelated to each other.

The Converter is hardwired to the batteries (to charge them if it is ON).
The 12v circuits are hardwired to the battery switch, hence if the battery switch is OFF,
there will be no power to what you are trying to run.

The Pro Mariner ProNautic line of chargers is excellent and fairly priced. Get the same amp rating as you have now.
