I have a pro mariner 40 amp charger. My starboard starting batteries recently crapped out and I have noticed that the dash charging gauge shows close to 14 volts going to the battery when engine is running but the batteries have very little juice in them. Checked out the connections and they are good however the charger itself is very hot on the top. How hot does a charger get and is it hot due to a bad battery drawing current all the time. The batteries are we're all replaced in 2014. I have a total of 5 batteries . One for the generator and the rest for house and starting.

You probably just have a bad battery. The charger will get warm when it is trying to charge a battery that won't take a charge. To load test, you need to remove the battery cables or you are testing both batteries in the bank which will prevent you from isolating a single problem battery.

From the ProMariner website FAQs

How hot is my charger supposed to get?

If it is a waterproof charger (ProTournament, ProSport, ProSport Generation 2, XPS or ProMite), it does not have external fans on it. It dissipates heat through the casing, so it does get warm to the touch. Most often we describe temperature as: you can touch the charger, but you would not want to carry it across the room.

Yep that's how hot it is. You can put your hand on it but you would not want to,leave it there for long.
