Charger dead?

So, I was able to remove the old charger. Mark, you are right, that thing is heavy! Picked up a Charles industries 2000 series 40 amp, 3 bank charger from my local supply store. Problem is that they want it mounted vertically. Every other charger I found available for today also wanted them mounted vertically, so I built a bracket. Used 3/4" marine plywood to make a backing (10" x 10") to mount the charger too and found some stainless steel "L" brackets that are 5" long. I have bolted them to the plywood and am going to screw them to the mounts in the boat. Hope to a have everything finished tomorrow morning. Gave the plywood a coat of paint and am letting it dry for the night. I will try to take some pictures tomorrow and post them.

So the charger is in. Here are some pictures starting with the old charger.

Heckuva job there Harold!

Charles make good stuff. I have an Isolation Transformer from them. We have a dock that wasn't wired correctly here. That solved the problem also My zincs last a long time.

That looks great Harold.

I think my OEM one failed because, of an accidental spritz (by me) with the garden hose...don't get that new one wet.

The ground is not hooked up in that last picture...............

Yup. It was too short so I had to get a new piece of wire. Finished it up today.

Thanks. I'll try not to get it wet.....

Harold, I'm in the same boat, no output from the charger, it comes on lights up and hums but I get nothing at the batteries, looks like I will be going down the same road as you this week. there did you get the Charles unit. I was looking at the ProMAriner 1240P.thanks

I guess it is time for these things to start failing. 21 years of service I guess is enough…..

I got the Charles Industries charger from my local marine supply store (I used to work there and they still give me a little discount – PM me if you would like the name of the store). I knew of the reputation and quality of the Charles product so I decided to go with them. I had a chance to get a Mastervolt product (for less $$), but went with the Charles. Most of the decision was based on being able to get it from my old store and having them behind the product and me. Both units needed to be mounted vertically so there was no difference there. Mastervolt does make one that can be mounted horizontally, but it was not in stock in the other store and was more money than the Charles.

The ProMariner seems to be a nice unit also at a decent price (at least from the Amazon listing I found). FYI, That unit also says it must be mounted vertically so you will need to build a mounting bracket also. I thought about mounting it to the bulkhead forward of the engine, but did not want to “block” access in that area if I needed to squeeze in front of the engine to get to anything on the starboard side without having to pull the engine hatch. Also mounting to the bulkhead would have involved moving the wiring, which I did not want to get involved with.
