I have Z-Hurth transmissions on my 320 DA. The maintenance manual states the fluid should be changed annually and the process seems not to be too difficult as depicted in the manual. However, I recall the delivery captain didn't sound like it was a simple job, and the marina charges $260 per engine to do it. That's with an extrra $100 per engine because it is a Hurth Transmission. Is transmission fluid usually changed annually, is it a difficult job and do you do it yourself? Why is the Hurth trannie $100 more per engine to change? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

I have Hurth 630 V drives on a 330DA and do the service myself. You'll need a suction oil drain device to suck the fluid out. I usually do it through the filter opening. The filter kits are expensive. I think I paid $55 each from Transmission Marine <look on the internet>. They use regular Dextron II or III fluid and use 5 qts, so it cost me about $70 bucks each, and about an hour of time. Once you learn how to do it, it's pretty easy. Also, I've learned that if you do the scheduled maintenance on these things they last and last. I have 1425 hours on mine and have done nothing, but change the fluid & filters <knock on wood>

ZF recommends changing the filter on a ZF63 or Hurth 630 after the first 25 hours, then 300 hours thereafter. Some people change it sooner at 200 to 250 depending on how they use the boat. As others have mentioned, the filters aren't cheap $40 for generic and +$60 for ZF. Buy five quarts of ATF, add 4, check level and fill appropriately with the 5th. The unit itself holds four and the rest usually gets used up in the lines and transmission cooler.

It's a pretty straightforward job. LMBoat called it right.

Okay mine are 63 IV 's and they say not to pump out but to drain them. You can't pump out through the dipstick. Sounds like some are pumping out though the filter?
