I am thinking about replacing the raw water pump on my port motor. I have Cummins 6cta450m8.3 engines in a 2001 400 sedan bridge. it looks pretty tight to get in there. I was wondering if anyone with the same engine has done this themselves? or is this something better left to a mechanic?

I think I have the same set us as you even though the boats are different. Port pump has good access and is easy to do <V-drive>. Strb one a different story as it is between the engine and fuel tank. I've done it a few times. I've found it easier to remove the pump from the engine first, then change the impeller <only 2 bolts and 2 hoses to remove>. You have to do alot of it by feel, mirror, etc. It is easier, and you can spin the shaft, check the bearings, leaks, etc, then install the whole pump. It all depends on how mechanical you are.

Thanks for the reply. I am not to sure that our setup is the same mine are straight drives with the front of the port engine up near the forward bulked. I have to take the belt cover off but not to sure if I can squeeze in between the front of the engine and the bulkhead to reach the pump.
At this point I am going to replace the pump with a new rebut one so I don't need to mess with the impeller in that small space.

Hi Matt,

I have the V-drives so the starboard motor is my tough one. We do have the same motors otherwise.

I see that we both read Boatdiesel. See my recent post over on the Sport Yacht section, 460DA Owners, about changing impellers. If you can, always drop the difficult pump out in order to change the impeller on the bench. I learned that long ago from another CSR member, Chad.

And yes, I really recommend the SeaMax pumps for your motors based on my experience with them.
