I am restoring my boat that I picked up last year its a 1987 Sea Ray cuddy cabin 230
Engines
350 Chevy Mercury out drive
Just bought 87 Sea Ray last fall restoring it. I just turned 24 hrs. on the motor and need to change oil. I know their are different kits out there to suck oil up and out dipstick, but can someone help me in steering me in the right direction to go concerning this first time changing the oil. Trying to figure out what to buy. Thanks

I bought a PELA 650 for $90 more than ten years ago and have more than pleased with it's performance. I bought it for changing oil in my first inboard, and have been using it for oil, old fuel in any gas tank, vacuuming gear oil out of nooks and crannies, etc.

The pickup hose gets snaked down dipstick tube and suction gets created with a few strokes of the pump handle. Usually once it starts, it will go til there is no more oil. Sometimes the siphon gets interupted and you need to reposition. There is a 6.5l capacity, and an auto shutoff when full.

Like a regular oil change, best results are with warmed up engines.

You may find there is a drain hose attached to your oil pan already to facilitate easy changes. Either a drain pan or thick garbage bag can be used to collect the waste oil, but I think if you talk to enough guys, you'll find plenty who have made some real ugly messes over the years on removal of the full pan of oil, or snagging the garbage bag on a hose clamp.
The real nice thing about the PELA pump is that it has a pour spout whch eliminates further mess transferring to a waste oil receptacle.

If you have a drain hose on your engine that snakes out the garboard plug at the stern you can use this if boat is out of the water. I use a 12v pump on a can and pull from the dipstick tube. Just be sure oil is very warm or it will take forever. You can buy these 12v systems everywhere.

There's really no "one best" way to do it. Some like the cheap little 12v ones, some like the more robust 12v ones, some prefer a manual sucker, some prefer a vacuum setup, some prefer a fully automatic setup. It really all comes down to personal preference and the amount of money you want to spend vs perceived benefit.

There's actually quite a few threads on this and I doubt we'll really say anything different in this new one - I mean, it's not like the part of this industry changes much.

Here's one of the threads I eluded to - I'm sure you can find more. http://clubsearay.com/showthread.ph...of-These-to-Change-Their-Oil?highlight=sucker

i just bought a new new oil extraction pump from West Marine. It was $89.99...it goes down the dipstick tube..works great .
