Here's the old filter, still installed. Since it's threaded on both sides I'm thinking I'll have to loosen the bell shaped nut (marked with a red O) and then spin off the u-shaped pieces (marked with green O's) together, then spin off the filter, then reverse the process.

Make sense?
How much fuel should I expect to come out of that hose?
Is teflon tape the right product for the threads?

Thanks!

Update: The method described worked, it was not a hard job with two adjustable wrenches. Very little fuel came out of the hose, I had a diaper laid out underneath and a zip-tie ready to secure it in an upright position. Used HD teflon tape on the filter's threads (after cleaning off the old pipe dope). Anxious to get some electric and water hooked up so I can test everything (plugs, fuel filter, oil change, impeller change).

Yes I do. The in-line filter has probably not been changed since '05, the date scribbled on the flame arrester. With my port engine out for replacement I serviced everything I felt comfortable with.

Where is the fuel filter located on the 4ESZ?
