My windlass is starting to slip on the rope, seems to like the first 20 feet of chain much better. Can someone suggest the proper chain to use? Regular or stainless? Size?
I only bot in fresh water and would probly use 100 ft. max. of chain.

290 Sundancer.

100 ft of chain rode is about what are 310 came from the factory with, will double check when i get to boat but 85% sure its 3/8" standard galvanize.

S.S. would work but would be more pricey.

wouldn't use plane old chain as it will rust. would likely work but will get rusty and make a mess.

I am by no means an expert but my best friend Google taught me some things about stainless as an anchor chain and it wasn't good. Google it and you will probably stay with Galvanized

Your windlass gypsy should be marked with the type of chain it is designed for. If the rode is slipping, it may be time to replace it, a new rode/chain combo might be the best solution. 100' of 3/8 chain is going to weigh close to 150 lbs. That much weight, that far forward could affect the trim on your boat.

with set the up on our boat, the chain weight in the bow is a good thing. that is a good point however.

i measured the diameter of the links and is 3/8 for sure. not sure how you measure link length and width though.

Groucho, do as Blue Yonder mentioned mentioned and check your gypsy, but most likely you have 1/4" High Test/G4 (standard or mooring link chain CAN NOT be used). It may also be stamped on the links. I also agree that it may be time to clean or replace the rope... or flip it end for end. You might also need to replace the finger spring.

Gary - unless something has been drastically changed from original, you won't have 3/8" chain - that is pretty big. You probably don't have 1/4" like Groucho, but likely have 5/16" (same HT/G4).

I'm guessing in 2006 the 290 & 300DA have the same windlass. If you have an Imtra Progress 1000 windlass, it needs 5/8 dia, 3 strand nylon rope, spliced to 30 ft of 5/16, G4 galvanized chain. I finally replaced the original rope/chain rode this year, thought about all chain, then compared the cost. I opted stay with the rope/chain.

As Dennis mentions, if the finger is slipping on the rope, replace the spring.

Thanks everyone....I bet the spring is getting weak..although I bet the windlass hasn't been used more than 20-30 times. We tie up to a dock most of the time. I was hoping for an easy answer, but I'll make note of the windlass this weekend and go from there.

You might find it in your parts manual, too. If you don't have your original, paper manual, you can download your manual from Sea Ray's website.

this dennis; we use 3/8 a lot in the trucking industry.

thats what i thought to. a standard 3/8 chain is different and a standard 5/16 is to small

this does seem to be an odd size. will have to check windless and owners manual and see.

mine it is a lowfrance<spelling?.

I'LL BET YOU ARE RIGHT THANKS Dennis

When I upgraded my previous 410DA to all chain, I used the following website for reference info: www.1st-chainsupply.com/aboutgrading.htm. Ended up buying a drum from them and split it with a dockmate.
