Chain + Rope vs All Chain

Anyone know the weight of an all chain anchor on average? I know it varies on link size. Seems like a crazy amount of weight to be up there bouncing up and down!

5/16" is about a pound per foot, it goes up about 1/2lb per 1/16" from there.

680 is alot more then a a few places I have found.. thanks for the link though.

How do you guys tie your rode to the anchor cleat with an all chain rode?

Use a snubber... my snubber is a 10' piece of 5/8" triple strand rope with a loop on one end and a SS chain hook on the other.

Make sure your comparing apples to apples... G40 High Test, Windlass Anchor Chain, 3,900 lb WLL, hot dip galvanized.

Our boat has a "locking" lever that captures the chain and transfers the load to a big pin through a large bracket. I assume this is a good enough method four our land locked mud bottom lake.

My 250' of 5/16 (8mm) 316L stainless steel weighs about 240 lbs.

My "new to me" boat has all chain and so far so good. I have to either make or get myself a snubber though.
Best part: We sometimes anchor in a place that can get very crowded. Although I've never had an intox or otherwise distracted boater run over my anchor line I've had a boat bounce it a couple of times, and know of two people who have had their anchor lines eaten by a prop so I was always nervous about that.
Not this year!

I'm running with 300' of chain, and loving every foot of it! :smt001

Our boat came with 200' of chain and after some research we decided to add 100' of 8-plait rode instead of more chain. I've heard that you don't want to splice or connect chain to chain and that if you want more chain you're better off replacing your existing chain with a longer length. We decided against that since the majority of places we'll anchor in will not require more chain than what we have now. When anchoring in an area with a large tidal shift, we'll need more length. I'm doing the 8-plait splice myself though I've been so busy the past couple of weeks I need to get back to the project and finish up before our trip to Canada. The first part of the splice will be for the bitter end, the second splice will need to be spliced directly onto the chain. For anyone adding rode to their ground tackle, I highly recommend using 8-plait. It lays nicely and supposedly ages better than 3-strand.

I just ordered 250ft of chain for my boat... Still debating on putting it on or not? And then how do you put in on just let the windless wind it up out of the tub? And should i cut it, Is 250' too much? 05 sea ray 320

Just finished splicing the rode to the bitter end of my chain. So 200' of chain + 100' of 8-plait rode. I'll post pics later. I'm very pleased with the results.

I would stretch it out and have an assistant give me a hand guiding it so it doesn't kink up on you. I've got to pull all of mine out to mark it at different lengths somehow (leaning toward a couple of bright colors of paint) and I'm waiting for my son to be available for a couple of hours to give me a hand. I dock port side to at my home dock so it makes laying it all out to mark it a little easier.
The length depends on how much you can fit in your locker. You may want to try coiling it in there first to see how much you can fit. The more, the better. You can always open a link and shorten it if you need to.

if you dont add it let me know I would be intrested in buying it! ha

Odd question but does the weight of all that chain decrease the passenger capacity of the boat? You just added several hundred pounds to the bow so I'd think that might mean one or two less passengers?

Or just kick me off and have several hundred feet of chain added...

Im not sure about that one... I fig since its yacht certified and does not have a weight or persons plate it don't really matter.. And when ever you put a few people in the rear seating it evens out anyway.. I put 200ft of chain. And it didn't make a difference but anchoring is a lot easer i will say that... Now I'm looking into making the trim tabs bigger and 4 blade props.. Or just buying the 38 or 40 sea ray lol... If the wife lets me...

My windlass sometimes binds when feeding rope through so I'm planning to add 50' more chain to my current 25'. Should be more than enough given the depths I anchor in and since the windlass has never had a problem feeding chain, well hopefully soon I won't be running to the bow to clear the gypsy wheel.
