We are thinking about a trip to the Island while we're in California and does anyone have a suggestion on which hotel is best and do you recommend the trip?

I have flown over them.
From what I have been told best to ferry day trip to them as accommodations are scarce and expensive. Looks like a neat ferry ride. Not very big place from the air.

It is worth the trip.

gooogle Catalina express ferry. They run boats over from various so cal locations on a regular basis. I would suggest you run over in the morning, when there is less wind. The boats are fast and you can get there in about 1 hour.

There are a lot of hotels, and they are geared toward tourists, so I would suggest you google a hotel web site and search for a good deal.

Most people go to Avalon. The water will be cold this time of year, but you can rent wetsuits and snorkel gear. There are also lots of touristy things like sub rides, zip lines, etc your kids will enjoy.

Avalon is your best bet with a family. Plenty to do for a couple of days.
