I changed out my impellers yesterday, and one side lost 3 splines...found them all in the immediate pump housing lodged in the 4 water vents of the housing...on the other side I lost 5 splines and they are nowhere to be found in the pump housing...where do I look next?

I'm pretty sure the the pump is a Sherwood 17000 series pump.

Any thoughts would be great...

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

You will need to pull the end cap off the heat exchanger nearest the water pump. I'd tell you which side, but I don't know which one "the other side" is. Look for the outlet hose on the water pump and follow it to the heat exchanger; it enters the cap you need to remove. You should find all of the missing vanes there, but if you don't, pull the hose off of the inlet side of the transmission oil cooler and check there. If you find no vanes in either place, then they have been beaten up into small enough pieces to pass thru into the exhaust and out of the engine. Remove any rubber pieces or broken zincs you find in either the heat exchanger or oil cooler. Also the heat exchanger is sealed with o-rings so be delicate as you slide the end cap off and on.

As a suggestion, not the engine hours and figure out how many hours you have on these impellers……for future reference, next time change the impellers about 50 hours sooner. It is a lot easier to waste a few running hours on an early impeller replacement than is is to tear down the cooling system to find broken vanes.

+1 to that!
