Cat 3116’ s heat exchangers

Can I take all may heat exchangers off for the winter and leave them off so I May rebuild / clean over the winter at my
leisure?
Will the engines be ok during the winter?

I would winterize as normal them remove. The engines should be fine. Technically you could do less but I wouldn’t.

The aftercoolers on the 3116 are jacket cooled (antifreeze), I would not leave them without coolant in the the heat exchangers because part of the cooling circuit has antifreeze in it. If you drain the heat exchangers, the aftercoolers and hoses,fittings, etc supplying the aftercoolers would have no freeze protection in freezing temperatures.

To do the Heat exchangers is a 2-3 day job on a leisurely schedule.

pull day 1 /Soak in BB overnight
Reassemble with new oings
Day 2 Reassemble to engines.

might want to redo coolant and all hoses. If preplaned, not a bad job.
