carpet rubber backing flaking

There is some kind of paint on backing - do a search - It has been covered in detail on here, including a follow up thread after a year or so of use

Several of us have also used Vinyl-Dip after scraping off the rotted areas of rubber.

Rubber backing on carpet is drying in spots from heat, the fabric is showing. Is there any product that will treat the area. Carpet is only a few years old.

Gary, the backing on the OEM carpeting that Sea Ray uses is prone to flaking. The backing is a carbon-based rubber that deteriorates and breaks down easily. If you decide to replace it, be sure to use a carpet that does not utilize a rubber backing. If you'd like, I can send you some FREE samples of our vinyl-ribbed AquaLoc backing. We are a sponsor on Club Sea Ray. Thanks.

I just coated my carpet (2004 39' Sea Ray) this season with something very reasonably priced. I found a gallon of rubberized white roof coating at ACE hardware for approx. $26 and it was enough for two coats on all of the carpet. The consistency does not bleed through the carpet when you are applying it. I used a 2" trim brush and 4" roller along with waiting for the first coat to dry. I first prepped the carpet by pressure washing all of the loose backing off and then letting it dry out before applying the paint. I also used some blue masking tape on the binding edge to keep it off. If I remember correctly the can had a blue label and a picture of a seal on it. Something like "Elastometric" in the name.

Welcome to the club of rubber backing all over our boat!! When you do upgrade to new carpet, check out the carpet Corinthian has.

Upgrade not necessary. Like I said, three seasons and counting on my paint with ZERO sign of wear or failure. Www.snapincarpet.com is also a very viable option.

Gary, here is a tread that discusses this isue.

My rubber backing seams to have fused its self to the fiberglass, tried to clean the fiberglass floor yesterday without much luck:smt013
I plan to first try the plastic spray before I go through the trouble of replacing the carpet. Good Luck.
