My 1995 Sea Ray 330 Sundancer has carpet inside the entire bilge inside the cabin bilge (where the shower sump box sits and the one forward of that). It appears to be from the factory this way. My question is WHY?!?! My sump box failed and over flowed and now I have a wet bilge and thus wet carpet. Why would Sea Ray do this? Is it glued in as good as the other stuff?

Thanks!

My guess (and it's only that) is that the carpet was installed first, before the steps, etc were installed. The guy who installed it either 1) just rolled out the carpet and didn't feel like making any cuts or 2) was new and didn't know where it should stop and carpeted the whole thing to be safe. Then no one cut it back to the proper area.

I say this because the carpet in my 270 AJ extends just a little under the steps. It's apparent that the steps were installed after the carpet was laid.

The carpet in the finished bilge areas is there for 2 reasons:

- Sound deadening
- Protection for the stuff owners store in the cabin bilge. Without carpeting, your pretty Craftsman Tool box and you wife's toaster oven will slide all over the place and bang into the bulkheads.

The actual carpeting Sea Ray chose for the interior below deck compartments is water proof if you don't let it stay in water for an extended period of time. We all have a sump box issue at some point in our boating lives, and Sea Ray knows that. The carpet can be shampooed and dried and it looks new when done.

Thank you for your reply! Much appreciated!

If it's a space intended for storage, I can sort of see the reason for carpet. But carpet in the bilge still seems silly to me. I would rather have some type of removable non-skid mat in there.

We used to have 17' searay that had carpet in the gear storage area that was connected to the bilge. Soaking wet carpet all the time.
