Ok, I have five year old snap in cockpit carpet that is under a covered freshwater slip and the carpet and backing itself are ok. However, the binding is looking rough. Estimate to replace all three pieces is minimum $500. Has anyone had the binding redone?

Contact John at: http://www.snapincarpet.com/

Also, check out their website.

He and his wife are the owners, do fine work, and are great people to deal with.

Your estimate of $500 seems very high.

The bindings on the snap in carpets are made of Sunbrella just like your mooring cover and Bimini Top.

If you want your bindings replaced, just get a local canvas shop to do it. Your dealer can give you the name of the person(s) they use for canvas repairs.

those guys are usually not the cheapest ones,
on average they charge $1 a foot of binding

Thanks guys, the $500 ballpark was from the folks at custom marine carpet aka snapincarpet . com.

I've been to two of the three canvas guys here in the Atlanta market and they both say their equipment won't work with the carpet for some reason. They are who my MM dealer uses.

I've also been referred to matworks aka matworks.com and they do some awesome work but will not repair other companies carpets. They have quoted $400 to $500 as well. I can't beleive this is such a pain...

There are a couple of alternatives to consider.

You may want to check into purchasing the Sunbrella fabric yourself from a canvas guy and then take your carpets to a carpet store and have them replace the binding.

On the other hand your carpets are already five years old so possibly you may be better off in the long run to replace the carpet with new ones now because there is no telling how long the backing will last on the ones you have now. A lot of folks don't get more than five years out of the factory carpet. Once the backing fails, it sticks to the gelcoat and really at that point in time your only choice is to re-place them.

Yep, I'm leaning towards replacement, but would hate to find out afterwards that I could have spent $80 bucks and got another season or two out of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to post pictures whichever way I go.

I'm stunned at the price!

If its marine, double the price.

Try a local home carpet company that will make area rugs for home. That $500 price is simply to blow you away because they don't want the work unless a fool gives it to them.

You might find a more sensible price taking off the marine lable! When you find one that will do the work post them here for others. This is a common problem.
