Carpet backing

Does the 'underpadding' get nasty? I am looking for additional cushion for my 220 SD.

The snap in carpet on my boat tends to get 'smelly' after a full summer of fun. I break out the carpet cleaner a few times to try and clean the smell out, but just wondering if the underpadding will also smell/mildew.
it hasn't at all. However my cockpit stays fairly dry. Full Bimini is always up front to back and I keep cockpit cover on when not at the boat. I will try to find where I posted the pic of it.

Edit: Couldn't find the thread I posted the pics in, so here is one of it cut to the same size of the carpet piece that covers it (bought it at HD):

Anyone have a good way to remove the crumbly backing from large areas of carpets? I've taken small areas off using a scrub brush and a wire wheel chucked into a drill, but i think it will not be time effective for the entire carpet.

I've posted this elsewhere with a picture (just don't know where) before, but I also have the cheapo rubberbacking version. I bought some of the thin bubblewrap-like under-padding for floating floors and cut it to fit under the carpet. It added a nice comfortable cushion and three years later the rubber backing is as good as new. The under-padding is still holding up just fine. A roll is only $24 and there is enough there to probably do the cockpit of a 500DA.

JediJD may chime in here - or PM him - and ask him what he used. He got a gray rubber garage floor type matting from HD that he cut to fit under the carpets of his 380. It worked very well as an underlayment...

Does it stay flexible? How long does it take to cure?

I used plastidip on the small areas that deteriorated first on my 7 year old 340, but once it becomes a large area, go to Lowe's and get a gallon of "Ultra Roof 1000" and do the whole backing. It brushes on like mayonaise and worked great on my 10 year old 410's carpet backing.

I just redid the back of my carpet with Plasti Dip only to find out that when it dried the carpet shrunk, now the snaps don't line up...:smt013... Now looking at new replacements.

Mine shrunk a bit, but was able to get all the snaps to work, just take your time. Snap what you can, walk on it a bit, then retry.

About to use the ultra 1000 on my carpet backs.. the one question does it stick to the cockpit floor when in the sun/summer?

any regrets using this?
