Our 2008 SeaRay 38DA cockpit carpet backing is deterorating. Basically the black backing is crumbing and making a mess, and some has stuck to the cockpit fiberglass floor. The front of the carpet is Ok and don't really want to buy new carpet.

Any suggestions on if one can "recoat" the back of the carpet, I recall from somewhere that someone had used truck liner paint/coating. Also, any ideas other than getting a pressure washer (my electric washer didn't work...not enough pressure), on how to remove the backing stuck to the floor?

I tried to do a search, but as soon as I entered anything I was taken to the BOE site???? Probably my computer (work) which has all kinds of stuff added by IT that does who knows!

Thanks,

Mike

A dockmate used that flexible paint that goes on trailers/rooftops. About 20.00 a Gallon at home depot. I'm fixing to do mine. It looks good and he swears by it.

I removed my carpet b/c I got tired of the black backing rubbing off. I haven't done this yet but more than likely I will do this next summer. I put Sea Dek on my swim platform and love it. No slipping and sliding - dry or wet. Comes in a lot of colors and thickness as well.

Just an idea.

I used plastidip on the small areas that deteriorated first on my 7 year old 340, but once it becomes a large area, go to Lowe's and get a gallon of "Ultra Roof 1000" and do the whole backing. It brushes on like mayonaise and worked great on my 10 year old 410's carpet backing.

I've posted this elsewhere with a picture (just don't know where) before, but I also have the cheapo rubberbacking version. I bought some of the thin bubblewrap-like under-padding for floating floors and cut it to fit under the carpet. It added a nice comfortable cushion and three years later the rubber backing is as good as new. The under-padding is still holding up just fine. A roll is only $24 and there is enough there to probably do the cockpit of a 500DA.

I used Plastidip on several spots at the beginning of the season. So far it appears to we wearing well.

It will Jeff. It's just hard to use when the entire backing finally begins to fail - that $6 can of plastidip just doesn't go very far!

Carter...did you brush the other coating you mentioned? Does it come in black?

Hey Jeff,

Yes, I brushed it on. I only found the Ultra in White. Since it is designed as a mobile home roof coating, I bet white is it - for reflectivity. Since it is not visible in our application, I don't feel the color matters... I'll let you know how long it lasts - six months so far and it still looks like the day I put it on. My backing was shot and I was ready to order new carpets when Skip (on this Forum) suggested roof coatings from Lowe's...

Does the 'underpadding' get nasty? I am looking for additional cushion for my 220 SD.

The snap in carpet on my boat tends to get 'smelly' after a full summer of fun. I break out the carpet cleaner a few times to try and clean the smell out, but just wondering if the underpadding will also smell/mildew.
