Our 290 Sundancer has carpet on the deck that I am currently not using because the backing is wearing off and leaves a layer of grit between it and the deck. The carpet is fine so I'm thinking if I could find some of the backing that the manufacturer uses I could paint the back of the carpet and re-install it. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, you're not going to find anyone selling just the backing on its own. If you do replace the carpet, be sure to only use a carpet with a vinyl-ribbed backing. If you'd like, I can send you some FREE samples of the snap-in marine replacement carpet we manufacture. Thanks!

Some folks have tried various rubber backing applications. Search and you'll find some threads. It did not work for me - spent a bunch of time and a bit of money dinking with it - and ended up getting replacement carpets anyway.

Just be sure you do not get rubber backed replacements. Get the newer stuff (it isn't black).

Exactly chumbley. Here is a picture of the good vinyl-ribbed Aqualoc backing:

I would definitely suggest you check the existing threads on carpet backing repairs. I re-did my carpets this year because of the good ole black powder problem and so far am very pleased with the results. Several materials have been used successfully according to the threads, but I used PlastiDip to touch up several areas. Just painted it on the bad areas after using a wire brush to scrape off the loose backing. Total cost less than $15 to patch up about 6 sq ft of carpet backing.

I bought new set from Snap-In directly and chose to go with the black backing again. Why- the sample piece of carpet they sent me that had the white type vinyl/rubber backing was not as thick and plush as the one with the black backing.

They told me that the ounce weight of the carpet without the black backing is lighter than the black backed carpet.

Not sure if Corinthian is the same way but I would check with them first.

The only backing we use is a vinyl-ribbed one called Aqualoc. We don't use any black rubber or white vinyl backing. All of our Berber carpets are 30 to 36 ounce face weight, which is thicker and plusher than the 28 onuce black rubber stuff. Anyone can call or PM me for some FREE samples.
